Can't Identiy what it is I am afraid of

Panic can and does manifest itself in any number of ways and doesn't always match the criteria, but it is treated the same way. Accepting that it is a panic attack and letting it happen will shorten the period and learning relaxation techniques will make it easier to deal with and these two things are very important to be able to do before you even try to find what the trigger is that sets you off. It sounds like you are developing agoraphobia, which is a condition that is definitely reversible. The flight or fight syndrome shuts down every thing unnecessary in preparation for the fight or flight and feeds in adrenaline. Un fortunately it some times gets it wrong. The loss of feeling to the extremities could be normal feeding of more blood to the internal organs to protect them much like it would do in the case of hypothermia. The warm tingle could be the increased blood flow. In this case a mantra where you repeat I'm ok I don't need to do this can help. The fight or flight syndrome won't shut off until it realizes there is nothing there or you tell it there is nothing there. I know easier said than done but it can be done if you take the time to work at it. It does take time though.  I used to have agoraphobia real bad and now I don't but it did take a fair while to get rid of it.

Im new to this and also having trouble figuring out what my triggers are.  My adult daughter was baptised today, juust a family event, less than 20 people.  I took .25mg Klonopin at 2:30pm, church was ok, I had a 5 minute panic flash while standing, but we sat down and I breathed my way out of it and focused elsewhere.  At dinner 6:30pm 3/4 way through I began a full blown, cant feel feet/hands, naucious shaking attack, tried to go outside for a walk, feeling came back to my hands and feet but shakes wont go away.  My husband brought me home and I slept for 4 hours.  It always starts with this sudden feeling of warm tingle across my chest and upper arms, naucious stomach, then the blood loss to hands and feet.  Im making a phycotherapist appt tomorrow with recommendation from my Dr.  This is week 3.  We finally found my issue was "Panic Attacks" after several medical exams and 2 trips to the ER.  I dont think my family understands, they just keep asking if im ok.  I know I didnt understand until it hapened to me.  So Im home alone again, just woke up and feeling confused.  Im glad I found this site.  You helped me understand im safe, and im going to be ok if it happens again.  I cant drive alone yet, and feel better in my own home. But Im more secure knowing I can come here and read and maybe learn some things, and keep my mind busy.

Hi,
Not sure if anyone can relate, but in my experience, when I'm really relaxed, I don't dream much (or at all) at night. When I'm anxious or fearful during the day for whatever reason, I tend to have dreams/nightmares at night and toss & turn, either the night before the stressful event or the night after it.   The dreams (if I can remember them upon waking) generally reflect what fearful thing my mind was preoccupied with. I'm not much into analyzing dreams or anything, bit if you continually have "bad dreams" about a certain situation, it might help to identify what it is you're afraid of, even at a subconscious level. Welcome your comments! (PS. If you eat a large pizza right before bed, those dreams don't count....:)

Cheers,
Don

Hi Joanne, I don't know if this will help you, but I has a similar problem recently.  I had insomnia after I had surgery and couldn't figure out why.  I couldn't get to sleep at all even thought I was comfortable, and not in pain, and really, really tired.  After about 4 nights of this, I was doing some progressive muscle relaxation, to see if that would help me sleep, and when I was totally relaxed, I just asked myself why I couldn't sleep.  And I instantly got an answer: I was afraid I wouldn't wake up again.  It was the first time I'd had surgery and I had been worried about how I'd go with the general and also the nurses in the hospital had made a few comments about being careful of DVT.  In my (doped  up and post surgery) mind I somehow turned that into a fear of sleeping.  Anyway, asking myself a question during PMR seemed to get me the answer.  Hope it helps. Fran.

Hello and thanks for this wonderful forum and support environment.

I have recently experienced anxiety attacks for the first time and this has been quite a reality check for me.

I was vacationing in Mexico with my family last week for March break and when the episode arose (typically around midnight for me), I tried journaling.  I can't say that it helped identify the unique cause but it did permit some much needed reflection.

I am not through this and will continue to journal as a method to better understand.

Thanks again and greetings from a fellow Canadian :)

Brian

Interesting Joanne,

I would like to hear what other members have to say.  Have you ever considered keeping a thought journal?

Has anyone had trouble identifying what it is they are actually afraid of.  My panic disorder happens when I have to drive on certain highways.  I have no idea what it is I am afraid of other then the physical sensations of the panic attack.  My therapist is trying to get me to figure out what I am afraid of and I am stumped.
