New symptoms? How To Combat Them?

Hi everyone:  Normal people having crazy thoughts?  You bet!  Think of authors of horror films, books, etc.  Think of people who are creative and want to try new ideas.  Some are really quite outlandish - but can be fun.

Good point. What really is normal. I'm sure normal people have crazy thoughts too. I think we are just conditioned to think of them as a sign instead of a normal thing. For me normal is being able to function in the world we have to live in.

Deanna, good job on starting the program and working through the anxiety. I know we all wish it were easy to get back to feeling "normal". But I've been working the program for a little over three weeks, I'm currently on the third step and am feeling and have been feeling better since starting this program and being able to talk with the other members. Loves Trees has a good point, I've just started to accept the fact that yes I do have "crazy"(negative) thoughts, but me being able to accept it has helped me. Think about it, "normal" people have negative thoughts too, although they don't affect them like they affect us, they still have them. It makes me feel more at peace about them, so if you try thinking like that and it helps, go for it. Good luck on working through the program and good luck to your family also, you'll all do great, it just takes some work. :D

Stay positive,

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and prayers. I appreciate it and it helps knowing there are others rooting for me.
I plan to finish with the program as well. It's great each day I feel a little stronger and I am grateful as well as thankful for that. This is definitely a time when I need my strength and all my wits about me. :o)

Hi Deanna:  You certainly have been through a lot and I hope you are seeing light at the end of the tunnel.  This program will help you and as you can see, we are here to support you through bad times and we will also celebrate with you your successes and good times.  I will say a prayer for your daughter and family.  Let us know how it goes for her and for you too.

Hi Deanna,

Just read your post. A child going into surgery, no matter how minor, can make negative thoughts arise. My thought when I read your last phrase of this post is: you can't control your 'crazy' thoughts, you can control what you do with them. Keep going with the program. It is a process. You can get there. You can control what you do with all your thoughts. And there are lots of helpful people here for you who have been through the process of gaining control over anxiety.

Also I found it helpful to challenge myself when I got angry with myself. Anger takes a lot of energy and makes us feel like our own adversary. Accepting that we have "crazy" thoughts (i.e. negative thoughts) is a process but it is worth it in my opinion.

Good luck. Wishing your daughter the best with the surgery.

Hi Dtaber,

Be gentle with yourself! You are doing so well! Congratulate yourself for taking the steps to get help. Here are some ideas for you, related to Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

The following ten questions will help you to challenge any anxious thoughts. When you have an anxious thought, answer some of these 10 questions:

1. Is it "true"?
2. How do I know it’s true?
3. Is it 100% true? (remember something that is 75% or 99% true is
    not 100% true)
4. What's the evidence for it being true?
5. What’s the evidence against it being true?
6. Has it ever happened before?
7. What's different now?
8. If it were true, how bad would it really be?
9. What's the worst thing that could happen?
10. If the worst thing happened, how bad would it really be?

Please, members, feel free to add any tips or strategies you find helpful when trying to challenge your anxious thoughts.
