Nightmares and Panic Attacks

for 12 år siden 0 177 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi everyone,

Sorry for the late reply, I ran out of credit on my internet. The reason why it was so strange is that I'm not afraid of spiders, there was a huge huntsman in our room at a camp I went to and I was the one who took it outside. It was so funny because it jumped out of the container and landed on my friends foot so she screamed (this also happened in the middle of the night) hahaha.

That's a good idea Shari, sometimes those dream theories can be spot on, I love reading horoscopes too :). But yes there are also the silly ones. I think my nighttime attacks are like the ones during the day, as in I misinterpret what's happening. If I feel hot, it's probably because it's summer and has nothing to do with me being sick. I also know that you have to wake up if you're sick because you can't throw up in your sleep so when I wake up I'm worried that's what's happening, when it's most likely because someone has gotten up to go to the bathroom which is right beside my room and that's what woke me up. Once I actually fully wake up and realise this, the panic usually goes away.

Thank you Ashley, I'll keep working on it :)

Hi Kaitie,

Night Panic is very common. Do a keyword search in the forums and you will be able to find lots of discussions related to this. Using the program and managing your anxiety will help to alleviate the Night Panic. Also, use relaxation techniques to help yourself calm down after the dreams.

How was your night last night?

Good morning Kaitie :)

I always get in trouble with my Veterinarian  for doing  research :)  I'll come up with various ideas for what my dog could possible have and he just smiles and says, "You've been on the internet again."

Carbon dioxide imbalance is just one possibility.  It turned out it was, for me, the reason I had night panic. There's different physical reasons that could contribute.  But, regardless, even if you don't know specifically what it is, you can still overcome it by positive truths, this is just temporary, it will subside on it's own, I can handle it, etc.

Sometimes I look up what my dreams mean, online.  Spiders could symbolize something other than just being about spiders. I've found 3 things about dreams, sometimes they are just that, dreams and they make no sense.  Other times, I'm working out some problem or issue or it lets me be aware of what my concerns are.  And, then again with symbol dream interpretation, I sometimes find it's either spot on or it's complete hooey.  I go to dreammoods.com, even if it's hooey, I can still get a laugh out of it and it makes the dream less scary.  And, if it turns out to be spot on, I feel peace knowing why I dreamed it and I can move on.

I'm not sure if your afraid of spiders or not and that's why you dream about them, but my daughter has a spider phobia, because she got bit on the leg when she was a child.  However, this summer she bought a rather large Pink Toed Tarantula to get over her fear (I'm not telling other people to do it, I'm just mentioning what my daughter is doing :)  She still has fear, handling her, but she's slowly overcoming it and is determined to be comfortable around her.  I'm not afraid of spiders, but they wouldn't be my first choice of cuddly pet, although they are pretty cute (to me) and fuzzy :)  I guess it's all in your perspective.

Hi Kaitie,
A work colleague was afraid of spiders.  Once we worked in a small room, and there were lots of them on one of the walls, in our make-shift office, which was probably only 40 square feet, for 3 people and computers, in the unfiinished electrical room.  She ddn't notice them, since we faced another wall, focused on our work.

At one point she saw one, and said she really wanted to go home(she's an adult, by the way, and super-computer literate and athletic).  I just tried to play it down.

She survived, and I always wondered if this fear was something she should deal with professionally, with help.

Maybe it's something you need to deal with too  Arachnophobia is a legitamate fear, and treatable, I believe.  I used to love insects, and would admire them as a child

Hi Everyone,

Thank you Shari, and exactly you can't argue the truth. I love learning, and always get into trouble from my psychologist for doing internet research haha. You sound like you're doing well Shari, you always have great advice.

Loves trees, that sounds like a good idea, tv always helps take my mind off things too. It's so uncanny isn't it, that they're always around the same time? So many of us get them and I wonder why. Shari mentioned before about a carbon dioxide imbalance, is that the cause for us all? I definitely have to do that research!

That's understandable Hugs4u, work projects and assignments etc are always stressful and then once it's all over we wonder why we were so worried in the first place.

The spiders one was the weirdest of all, my subconscious comes up with the strangest things.

Hi Kaitie,
When I was working, and the project was really intense, I'd wake up with worry that I'd done something wrong(there was a small margin for error, and great repercussions).  I'm not sure it's the same thing, but it was nightmarish

I have had those too and the first thing I do is try to relax, deep breathing etc... If that doesn't work, I have to distract myself with tv and I eventually fall back asleep. They happen around the same time yours do, about 6-7 hours after I went to bed originally.

Kaitie,

I'm glad you brought up that heat makes it worse, it did for me too.  But, that will go away after time as well.  You're doing great.  Just hang in there.  It takes time and work and patience, but the positive results and benefits are well worth it!  The reason why I think the positive truths work, is because my brain can't argue with the facts and logic.  It knows when I'm lying to myself and saying hopeful things that I'm not sure are truth.  But, the truth is the truth and it can't be disputed. That's why I used to write them out on paper and then when I had a panic attack, I'd pull out my paper and read it out loud and I would calm down by the time I got to the bottom of the page.

Hi Shari and Davit,

Thank you, it's nice to know I'm not the only one, I thought I was going crazy. I think that will be helpful Shari, I might do some research too and find out the facts, knowing the physiology behind it will be a big help. I've noticed that heat makes them worse, as it does with all my panic attacks, so I'll be opening my window and turning the fan on too. I do puzzles too, it's a great way to unwind and it takes all your focus.

Yeah that's definitely something I need to work on, replacing the negatives with the positives and actually believing them. My anxiety has an answer for everything, and that's what it's holding on to. Once I can distance myself from it more, it won't have such a strong hold.

Thanks again for your reassurance :)

Hi Katie,

I used to be in a deep sleep and then wake up in a panic and it occurred at the same time every night as well.  I researched this phenomenon and came across an article by a medical doctor.  He said that night anxiety is caused by a carbon dioxide transfer imbalance.  So, once it was the known, I wasn't afraid of it anymore.  I would still have attacks, but would tell myself it's just an imbalance and I'll be alright once it gets balanced.  So, I would just try to calm my breathing (box breathing is explained in the relaxation techniques in your tool box on this site :)  Sometimes, I would just get up and do a circle word puzzle or do something to ride out the panic symptoms.  After awhile, if I woke up in a panic, I just said to myself, it's just the imbalance and then I'd just roll over and go back to sleep and awhile after that, it stopped altogether and I haven't had one of those in over two years.  So, as long as you tell yourself, this is nothing to be afraid of and it's just temporary and it will go away, over time it will.  It did for me :)  If I have nightmares, I just tell myself it's just a bad dream and I'm okay.  I know it sounds simple or silly, but counteracting negative thoughts with positive truths retrains your brain and it really helps to overcome it.  Also, you can tell yourself that you're fine and you're not going to throw up.  I think telling yourself this and believing it will take the fear out of it and calm everything down.  Your mind can talk you into things or out of things.  You can tell yourself positive things that will calm you, just as you can tell yourself negative things and make things feel worse.  I believe over time you will find that this will decrease and stop.  Just continue the program and continue to post and you'll get better and better :)

Your friend, Shari
