Cj, I've failed by not speaking to that person/therapist about my concerns, in the past. It's tricky, since I've been at different stages of maturity in my past. If it's a CBT specialist, there are clear ways determine progress. eg. Right now, I'd ask what I need and what I'm getting. "The Feeling Good Handbook" has a chapter for curious patients, about measuring success. That book is by David Burns, who was big in the behavioral movement. One small thing I'd look at is whether you've set goals, and reflecting after each session, or the end of the session, on success towards meeting goals. Some of your therapists may not acknowledge you the way you wish, but we've arrived at a crisis over time, and some untangling may be necessary, with different styles. Cj, you make sense when you're posting, so it's hard to judge much from here, other than to say I'm(and others are) available online to complement the professional who's going to be the gem you were before you forgot you were a gem! I wasn't well this week, and I'm getting out of whatever funk I was in...

Hi Canadianjem,

I would trust your instinct. If you feel she is not listening to you that is certainly  not a good sign - a counsellor's primary job is to be a good listener! However, if she felt you were talking a lot about negative thoughts she might have been deliberately not engaging in conversations around that in order to direct you in another more positive way...but you should still feel heard...If you feel comfortable you might want to bring up your concerns with her.

When it comes down to it the best indicator that a helping relationship is successful is if there is a strong connection between the client and counsellor. So if the bond doesn't develop then it might be smart for you to find another counsellor.

In your next visit what can you do to ensure you get the most out of it, even if it's the last one?

Just a little something I wanted to share with everyone here that might be helpful. Before I came to this siteThe Panic Center I worked on the program in their sister site. I was later referred to The Panic Center by one of the Educators on this site named Ashley.
Anyway that site is called The Depression Center you can find it by going to the top of the page where is says More Help, click on it and it will show you the sister sites to this one then you can click on any one of the sites listed and it will take you there..
The Depression really helped me a lot when I was dealing with some of these same feeling about myself that have been mentioned in this tread..What I learned there really made a huge difference in the way I see and feel about myself now. The knowledge I gained from reading and working on the program in The Depression center really made a huge difference for me when I started working the program here in The Panic Center..

So for me my anxiety and depression are kind of interlinked. This is not so for everyone but these two programs together really helped me and they really do complement each other nicely..

Anyway this is just a little tidbit I wanted to share about what worked for me on my journey.
Just in case anyone is interested in checking them out sometime..

I think you should find a therapist that will listen, really listen to you with compassion and give you homework to bring back next session. This kind of therapy helped me. maggee

I started to see a councillor two week ago and have seen her twice.

The first visit went ok and made me realize that i do nothing that takes myself happy but always do for others.

The second session, i feel like she didn't listen at all.
I told her how i had suicidal thoughts, how i hated how ugly i was, how i can't do anything right, how I'm not good at anything, how my past upsets me, how people in my life now that are family upset me.

All she said was drive to the grocery store, sit in the lot and go in when you are ready.

I told her i can go places and do things but my  chest is tight and i don't feel good and feel like I'm gonna panic.
She didn't comment or address anything else i told her and i felt like she wasn't listening.

Is this a good thing or bad thing? should i keep going back to her?  i

Thank GOD i am seeing a psychiatrist this week.

My anxiety is was worse at night and i need to take pills to help me sleep and most nights i sleep on the couch instead of with my hubby.

I feel like I'm loosing control.
