fear of walking alone in public places and open spaces

I can so relate to the walking thing~ I work for an attorney and we often have to walk across the street, as I walk through the cross walk I struggle the entire way mostly just hoping a greyhound bus will hit me, funny as it sounds I do it because I'm afraid they are staring at me which you know they are just because your in front of them, but I fear that I will fall in front of their car and they will laugh point and make a big scene. Good luck I haven€™t really found any way to over come it but I can relate. I mostly just run to get it over with. Preston

Marvel, in answer to your questions I am 36, I do work and I am doing so-so. For the most part I do not suffer anxiety/panic on an everyday basis. I go through extended periods of time where I am ok and then something will happen and I will go through a period of time, anywhere from a day to a couple of months, where I battle the anxiety/panic. Although I have faced times where I have desperately wanted to say in my home I have never allowed myself to do this for fear that I would become trapped there by panic. If you do not already have a therapist or take meds Marvel you should see someone quickly. Many people have specific phobias that they can overcome through desensitization and other methods. I wish you the best of luck!!! Rachele

hi rachele, how r u? well what r u doing now working/student?what is ur age? do u have any problem in work places? well generally when i have to pass across a group of people especially men ,i fear soo much that instead of passing them i'll return back or i'll choose another path. i find this very silly ,but i'am not able to overcome this problem. i'am house bound most of the time.i walk only thru silent streets.

Good morning Marvel. As a young girl I had very bad anxiety around crossing roads, although I didn€™t realize at the time that it was anxiety. I can now cross roads alone but I still dislike it. For me it is not fear of open spaces exactly but the thought that there is a lot to pay attention to in crossing the road and something may come out of nowhere and hurt me. I remember when I went to college there was a four lane road in between me and the school, I needed my mother with me for a week before I could cross that road. After she left I chose the quietest place to cross even though it wasn€™t the closest. I have desensitized myself to crossing them through time. It sounds like this type of therapy would probably work for you too. I hope you find something that helps. Rachele

Oh and adding to that, YES I very much fear open places such as the bridges and tunnels and such. If the bridge is 3 miles wide and I have to walk it, I will have a full blown panic attack. I do not do well on vacations.....

Well, I live in Houston....so you don't have to be a panic person to fear walking alone!!!!! lol I don't fear falling or tripping but I do fear other people around me. If someone is walking toward me, immediately I start to get anxious. I could very easily be home bound if I allowed myself. The one thing that keeps me out is the fact I have a job and when I am there I feel fine. It is outside of work that I do my biggest battles.

Hello Marvil, yep I've had that one,was it a sensation like you were unsteady and were going to fall over along with 'something bad'was going to happen?I found that I felt kind of exposed in open spaces i.e. crossing bridges or walking across a big field, I read that this could be due to feeling like there was no hiding place if you needed to escape quickly.Escape from what though? For me I was trying to escape from the panicky feelings that I had inside, which my brain was telling me was due to the open space, when really it was'nt.It was my anxiety disorder trying to rationalise that fear =open spaces. After taking it slowly and building up my confidence bit by bit it began to disappear as I hope it will for you too. Good luck... Neil.
