left alone

My job sometimes requires me to be on my own for a couple of hours without a relief man. I run master control for a broadcast operation on Saturdays, and a panic attack would likely mean I lose control of my post and the operation goes down. Until recently, this has never been a problem - in fact, I have enjoyed working by myself. But since my first *really* seismic episode in early July, I have been quite uncomfortable with the notion of being on my own for a few hours. Today though, I got through two hours of being alone just fine. I just reminded myself that I've done it successfully before and its no big deal. That, plus a third of a Xanax helped (I find I do not need a stiff dose of Xanax to function; anything from 1/2 to 1/3 of a 25'er works fine). Nice to know my fears didn't set me off this time and that I can probably call on this same reminder in the future. Good luck to you too.

Hi Katie, My fear of being left alone started after I fractured my pelvis in a car accident. When I was able to go home I still was in a hospital bed and needed assistance from my partner to do everything...bathe, go to the restroom pretty much everything. I was so afraid that when she went to the grocery or to run an errand that something horrible would happen and I wouldn't be able to leave the house I was also worried that something might happen to her. I am all healed now but the fear is still inside of me especially after I started experiencing horrible panic attacks. My fear now is that I will be alone and if I have an attack I automatically assume I am having a heart attack! I know there is no physical basis for my fear but I still have it from time to time. Today was one of those times. It was pretty mild but still uncomfortable. I hope your plan of brief periods alone will help you. I think they will. Hang in there...I do! Rose

Hi, Rose. I, too, have a great fear of being alone. My husband and I just moved to a new city where he is about to start Grad school. I'm absolutely terrified. I wasn't doing that well when we lived 10 miles from my family. Now, I'm not sure how I'm going to handle it. Hang in there. You sound like you're doing great. My husband and I are going to start our little "therapy" session next week. He's going to leave for little bits at a time. I'm going to try not to panic. Hopefully that will go well because the next week, he starts school and then I'm on my own (yuck!). I'm glad to know there are others out there with the same fears and aprehensions. Could you tell me a little more about some of your specific fears you get about being alone. I'm curious as to whether they're similar to mine. Good luck and keep in touch (I need people like you out there to inspire me). Katie

Hello all, I am writing this now because I am having a little anxiety (not yet full blown panic) because I am home alone. My partner ran to the store to pick up a few things and I feel weird! I really am getting slowly better at handling this situation but sometimes negative thoughts creep in and then the awful feelings come flooding back. Posting here helps me so much because I know you guys and girls know this all to well...its like talking to old friends. I took a xanax to help me calm myself. General housekeeping duties are my therapy so I can tell you we have the cleanest bathroom and windows on the block right now! Next I will move on to canning tomatoes as our greenhouse is supplying a huge number of delicious fruit right now. Thanks for being out there it means a great deal to me. God bless you all, Rose
