Mercy, I think this is a good idea. I'm from Ohio, a self-employed speech therapist with a husband and 2 kids (12 and 10). I love my job, my family and simple living. In the fall my husband and I operate a pumpkin business which keeps us quite busy. This quit is my 40th birthday present to myself. I stumbled upon this website one night surfing the web and is has truly been a blessing. This is my 5th quit attempt and I have never felt this positive or driven in any past attempt. I have found new information and unbelievable support since I joined. I feel I am now armed to quit for a lifetime (it also keeps my fingers busy so I don't smoke!). Nice. OK... I'm 49 yrs old, single father of one son and two daughters, ages 17, 15 and 12. My Son is the oldest. I work as a teacher in a community school in Western Canada. Saskatchewan, to be more precise. I've smoked ever since I was about 14 yrs old. I've tried quitting one time a couple of years ago... got four months in... and I went back to smoking. Long story and maybe I'll tell it here sometime, but it really doesn't matter. All that matter's is that I'm smoke-free today. Like Dupe, quitting is also kind of a Birthday present to myself. I'm 50 this Friday... and I wanted to do this before I hit that particular milestone. I wanted to do this for countless reasons, but that was one small part of it. My life is about my kids and my work. I don't have a lot of ambition aside from that. I just want a simple and meaningful life. And I want to have that as a free man, rather than an addict. I've been addicted to something or other all my life. The cigarettes are my last addiction, and as of this moment... that addiction is not calling the shots. I am. Ditto...nice. I am 53 years old. A photographer. Three grown children...and YIKES..grandmother to two beautiful little girls. I have a little dog I love very much. I adopted her as a hurricane Katrina survivor. She is the best dog ever. I love long walks in the woods behind my house. Travel is a HUGE PASSION. Anything outdoors. Nature.. nature.. nature!!! Enjoy water..and boating. I have a deep spiritual side and love the Lord. I attribute much of this quit to prayer and relying on Him. I have quit way to many times to remember!! Like Mark Twain once said..."Quiting is easy...I've done it a thousand times." This quit I know is for good. I will not have another cigarette. I fear getting cancer...I don't think God wants me to disrespect my body. Nothing about smoking even goes with my life style. The year before last I took a trip to Washington to do some trail hiking on Mt Rainier. I mean.....I hiked close to 4 hours straight going UP!!...and then had to hike some pretty steep trails down. I get all done with that and then..................I had a cigarette!! It is craziness in it's full form. I think that by accomplishing this I will have the confidence to tackle someother goals that have been clouded over by my smoke screen. I don't know why I smoke other than I am addicted. I can say I smoke to calm my nerves....but then again... I also smoke to perk up. I can say I smoke to get going.... yet I also smoke to relax. I don't have one particular reason I smoke. I truly think that I believed...or should say still have a hint of belief that smoking made life "better". But if you asked me what I would have to give up doing that I love if I quit........I would draw a blank. There is nothing I have to give up in life if I quit smoking....except...CIGARETTES. So... that is me :) I appreciate each of you fine people...and all the time you take to post thoughts... experiences... and tips on what helps. You never know what you may type out here, that may have prevented someone elses slip. I actually find encouraging others, not only rewarding, but a therapy for me. Hi, Not sure if this is permissable. But in a few other threads I learned a little about my new support friends. It was nice to have a little personal touch. It's healing to know the walks of life we come from. I wonder if people would like to give a little paragraph about themselvs. Nothing too personal. Just who we are...what we do....what's our passions..(travel,gardening ect.) why we are here and where we would like to be emotionally and physically after quiting smoking. Hi,I am 53,I come from a very large family, have quit smoking at least 703 times (so says my husband who quit once.) I am a full time office manager. I have been married to the same guy (go figure) for 32 years. I have three grown children, 2 daughters and a son, and one wonderful little three year old grandson who is my delight. Since the kids are gone, (2yrs now) I love the quiet, but love it more when they are home. My next great goal,(other than quitting smoking) is to retire, after working full time for tweny some years. I can't wait, I love to garden, knit, sew, draw, write, sing, or just to relax. Hope to do that in two years. I live in Saskatchewan, Canada (where the cigs are enough to bankrupt a person- reason #3) I ran across this website, while searching for helpful tips on quitting and knew this place would be an awesome help and so it has been. I look forward to getting to know & talk to everyone!
