I have a friend who has said that since I am quiting, he feels inspired to try to quit again himself. He is an older man, who has smoked for may years, already had one heart attack and has a pacemaker currently. he is a dear friend and nothing who please me more than to see him quit for good, and it is a motivator to me knowing that he is watching me to see how this quit goes for me. My question is about his plan for quiting. Rather than try NRT or speak to his doctor, he plans are to limiting himself smoking, and step himself down, such as 16 cigs 1 week, 14 cigs week 2, 12 cigs week 3 etc etc until he is no longer smoking. Myself, I think I couldn't do that as I am not that disciplined. Has anyone here successfully tried this type of approach? Thanks! I am scared for your friend. EVERY time I cut down I landed up smoking more than before without fail. I am sorry but I dont feel it will work. I think by not speaking to his doctor he is backing off from reality Get your friend to think ahead plan a date and use the NRT and professional support that is available. I have done it after 50 years of smoking so he can do it!! If this is a bit harsh so be it cos it is the truth and maybe he needs to hear it! Actually I did - gradually cut down from a pack a day to none, but I also needed to use the patches - I used the 14mg ones, and used them for 5 weeks. I think with graduall cutting down, it makes you more aware of why you smoking and that you can delay that one particular cigarette. Another thing that helped me was to write down when/where/why I was about to smoke and what could I do instead. Good luck to you and your friend!!! You will be a big support to each other!! In my opinion, cutting down on cigarettes like that only makes the person treasure them more. As they cut down, each one becomes more precious. They still have the drug in them ... so the junkie thinking is still going strong. Phil, My Gosh 50 years!!! I had no idea. GOOD for you! Icandoit, Maybe let your friend get his feet wet in this quit journey by implementing his plan. If it works, WONDERFUL. If it does not work and he realizes that this quitting journey is not for wimps; maybe then he will seek the advice of his doctor or try NRT. There are nicotine anonymous meetings available in many cities across the USA. Maybe that support group could help him. Does he have a computer? Of course, the program at scc is awesome. And being able to post has saved me sooo many times from slipping back into my destructive behavior. Ican... I could never do that, but....my grandpa quit by making himself wait one more hour each day before he lit up. He quit after two weeks. ~shrugs~ Give him unconditional support....and if it doesn't work for him, help him find something that does. Oh...and do what Joise said! :) Education works wonders.
