Coffee and smoking

for 16 år siden 0 5195 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hello there.  Congratulations on your quit!  You are doing just awesome.

I use to drink coffee with just sugar.  When I quit smoking, I started using cream in my coffee.  I would get the different flavors and try them out.  My morning coffee became a treat in itself.  When you first get up, wash your face and just get going through your morning.  When we quit, we learn how to live life without smoking.  One day at a time and one step at a time.  Pretty soon "not smoking" will be part of your routine.

Congrats again!

Lady

Great advice Trixyh!

It's very important that everyone takes care of themselves first. It's not possible to take care of others if you are not happy and healthy.

when I was getting prepared to quit, I started postponing every cigaret, esp. the one I had with my morning coffee.
after 3 days I could do for 30 to 40 minutes without that cigaret. so I changed my daily routine.
I did have my coffee, without it I was not awake, then had a leisurely shower, and used nice body creams which I put on with loving strokes, so it would take a little longer.
my hair takes no time, it's very short.
then I did the rest of my bathroom ritiuals, and before I knew it almost 1 hour was gone, without a smoke or even thinking about it, because I was pampering ME.
after that it was not as bad a day as I thought it was going to be, because I took care of ME first.
hopefully it may help you too.
good luck on your quit

I glad you made the adjustment. I also never missed a cup o' joe in my quit. It doesn't make me want to smoke and now it's my only vice if coffee is really a vice

Hi Renee! Your question was one of my major concerns too. I always started the day with a large coffee and a cigarette, and couldnt imagine starting the day any other way.
My doctor told me I would need to change the routine which was difficult to start with. I used to come downstairs, have said coffee and smoke, and then go take shower and get dressed. In the new routine I did the shower bathroom things first then went downstairs and took coffee.
However, I do believe my 24 hr patch helped enormously as I had no desire to smoke which was really strange for me as previously I wanted to smoke as soon as my eyes opened!!
Try the routine change and see if it works for you, if not I am sure someone else will have a great tip or suggestion- good luck!

I was so jittery when I first quit, and then I read on another site that the effects of caffeine are exaggerated as you release the nicotine from your body. On the advice of Ros, I tried Rooibos tea, which is also called redbush tea. It's delicious and doesn't have any caffeine.  I also discovered Chai, which to me, is still the best.

Morning Renee.

You're doing great!!   How did your first day go?!

This is just me but -  I immediately dropped coffee  for about the first 3 months of my Quit (and the black tea I love - an Irish Breakfast blend) because of the caffeine stimulant which was so hard-wired in my brain and went directly with two or even three cigarettes - I think my mind was set in a negative loop containing coffee, cigarettes and baleful thoughts about everything that was wrong in my life; now, I drink a herbal lemon tea drink or just iced water and within an hour I'm ready for a good breakfast - which was an impossible task five months ago!!   I have had coffee since (for instance I love a good quality expresso after dinner with friends and so I treat it as a stimulant to perk up my food-slowed body and to keep chatting like a good host....)

But, like Danielle says, it's more about altering habits than it is about "cutting out stuff" because you associate smoking with those things.   For me it's more about stopping caffeine intake because of my fondness for the "rush" of the caffeine... I was using caffeine as a drug and that's not good for my addictive personality!!

Hi Renee
I had to change my morning routine a bit. I didn't have my morning coffee till I got to work and then had it in my office where I couldn't smoke. I did this for about two weeks or so. Changing routines is a big part of making your quit successful. I didn't go on my home computer for longer then 10 minutes at a time, for my home office was the only smoking place in the house. Be prepared to do anything it takes to make your quit successful - you CAN do it.

Hi Renee,

Not a silly question at all! It's actually a pretty common trigger.

The best way to get rid of a bad habit is to replace it with a new one.

Try changing your morning routine. For example...

Drink tea
Read the paper to distract yourself
Eat breakfast
Brush your teeth
Take a quick stroll

Here is a silly question. How do I break the habit of smoking when I first wake up in the morning? That seems to be to hardest part of the day fr me. Any suggestions?
