A very important thing that mommies don't seem to do any more is teach their children how to face their fears. (some times because they were not taught) So we learn to hide from them. And they don't go away do they. Mommies used to get their children to face their fears head on and know which were real. So we are left with nothing left to do but hide from them. So in the beginning and for a while we have to use distractions to hide from them while we learn to do the things our mommies didn't teach us. Too late for mommy but not too late for CBT. Use relaxation, use medication and use CBT to teach you how to face your fears. CBT is no different than mommy teaching you there is nothing to fear in a crowd. CBT is a very good parent when it comes to doing this.

Hi Molly,
I'll bet you haven't read the manuals for all of your media devices, etc?  I plan to do that during wait periods, but always forget, and bring something to read.

If I took all my manuals, I'd know how to use the things I was supposed to know how to use in the first place, and save headaches.

eg. For my new microwave, I know I can actually disable the alarm.
For my car, I can switch to a city driving mode, so I think the gas consumption would be better.
For my computer, I found out it has a webcam, which I went into accidently!   It even has a face and sound recognition mode, which I've never explore.
My old cellphone, which I use as an alarm, has a sound recognition mode.

I think you could leave all your media devices at home, and take your manuals with you!  Imagine how pumped up you'll be to get back home and use them?

Hi Meg

Welcome, Could you take something to keep your mind busy, like a game or music or a book. Sometimes it helps when waiting around.

Good Luck

Hi  Meg,
I love lists and steps.  For travelling, I'd leave my luggage out for a while before the trip, and gradually place things there, so it wouldn't disturb my daily routines.
Sounds like you're closer to the departure date, though

Megan

Don't forget gravol, water and keep the lunch light so you don't get indigestion. Pepto bismal comes in tablets too.

thank you Red. Yes I'll think of it as steps

1. packing (which I need to finish doing NOW lol)
2. triple check packing (yes I make a check list)
3.  print boarding pass
4. get ride to airport
5. wait at curbside check in, check suitcase
6. go through security (I get disability line)
7. Use bathroom or go to gate
8. Go to gate or use bathroom.
9. Get medical boarding pass
10. Entertain myself

Exactly way easier said than done. haha. I have a portable DVD player but I won't play it til I'm on the plane, an ipod, a kindle, and my phone for texting/calling friends but not too much cuz I need to save battery and yes the cell phone charger in the bag.

Yes, I'll have my phone but I won't go online when waiting because it eats the battery and I need it to call my parents when I land. My friend told me she will be expecting me to text her so that can keep me occupied, plus I have no problem striking up a conversation with people. Once I'm seated at the gate I'll be better. I have plenty of distractions.

Hi Megan..
I have found it helpful to break things down into small steps. This helps me to not get to anxious when doing exposure work. This puts my focus on the smaller steps which takes my mind of the larger picture and by doing this I am more relaxed when doing the exposure its self..and sometimes I do get out the door too.
For instance:
Getting up in the morning.
Fixing and eating breakfast.
Getting showered.
Doing Hair and make up.
Getting Dressed.
Etc.. Etc...Etc.

Hope this helps..
