I'm Back. Should I take Effexor?

I am taking effexor and it seems to work well for me. It had to be combined with a couple of other medications for anxiety before I really felt "normal" and could make it through a day without all the tears. dumpling... the counseling coupled with the medication has changed my life. Finding a counselor that can realate to you seems to be the challenge. I finally found one that was willing to tell me how it was in no uncertain terms and that is what I needed. Find one that works for you and I think you will find true progress.

Hi people, I don't have that much experience with meds in particular but I do want to say that I felt great when I was taking 150mg Effexor a few years back. I loved the energy I got from the Nor-Epinephrin R.I. but I could only stay on the stuff for a few months when I started getting high blood pressure readings (I have had HBP for years) so my doctor took me off it and put me back on Prozac which I can vary at will from 20mg to 60mg per day as I need. I really miss the 'alertness' I got on Effexor but I'm reasonably happy with the medium sine wave effect of the Prozac overall. My feeling about meds is that if you are really losing capacity to function daily then you should not fear your doctor raising your dosage. The 'learned' effect from being more stable on the higher doses will help you to be more confident when you ease back on the higher amounts as you come out of the extra-depression that warranted the higher dose! Do you agree? Mind you, there are all kinds of physiological responses particular to the individual but your doctor knows your state of being, no? Find a good doctor and stick with his/her treatments. Know the difference between an interested/caring doctor and a 'plumber'!! Patrick

Null, Unfortunately, as moderators, we are unable to assist or prescribe medications. It is important to work with your doctor and pharmacist to find what will work for you. They know your history and can be of great assistance to you :) Josie, Support Specialist

I am on it, 75 mg. I spent most of my life battling depression without meds or therapy. was severely depressed as a teenager and after my brother committed suicide but mostly have managed to survive with positive self talk and a very supportive husband. Two years ago, I was under a lot of stress both personally and at work and my dr suggested effexor. It was amazing. After about 3 weeks, I was feeling better, not drugged or high like I feared, but NORMAL!!! funny thing I noticed was that colours actually seemed brighter and I have always worn browns and beiges. I found myself shopping for clothes attracted to brighter colours that I normally not wear. i went off it this spring and thought I was OK but but the end of August I fell off the cliff, suidicidal, the whole bit... It has taken from Sept 1 to now to get back to some level of sanity. so I don't know. I went off without consulting dr and still have never had therapy. went back on without consulting dr ( seeing her tomorrow to discuss therapy.

Doc wants me to take Effexor. I've read a lot of bad things about it, but suppose it helps? I mean, nothing else I've tried really has helped any. What about the risks? Also, I'm worried about the people who say you can never get off of it. I don't want to be taking medicine for the rest of my life.
