A few years back I decided that I couldn't handle living my life the way I was. I was letting my Panic and Anxiety control me. So I enrolled in a 12 week program that was going to teach me how to deal with my thoughts when I became nervous, anxious, etc. It was the best thing I had ever done in my life! The course used the book: Dying of Embarrassment: Help for Social Anxiety and Phobia By Barbara G. Markway, Ph.D., Cheryl Carmin, Ph.D., C. Alec Pollard, Ph.D., and Teresa Flynn, Ph.D. I've found that this book has done more for me than any other self-help book that I have ever read. I've recommended it to many friends, and they've all found it a benefit to them. It's been years since I took the course, and I can't say that I don't have any anxiety, but I've not had a Panic attack since, and I've learned how to deal with my anxiety through the exercises in the book. I still go back and read it when I feel particularly anxious, like I have been lately. Just to remind myself of the ways to avoid an attack. Everybody has what works for them, but I'd recommend checking out the book, or some sort of anxiety/panic disorder program. You'd be surprised at the freedom you feel when you can do things without anxiety/panic holding you back. Good Luck!

Hi Rose, I go to a self-help group one a week for these anxiety disorders. I know that a panic attack is very scary and if you associate a place with the attack... it causes lots of problems. I do not know much about the sister site here - YET! but as a first step... we (phobies-zero) teach each other to take three to five calming breaths 3 to 5 times a day. It learn to breath properly and controle the first physical symptomes that come with the hyperventalation. Next we learn a few mind exercises... Distraction; otherwise we create all sorts of horror stories and anticipate the woest. Positive Thoughts; Working with one positive thought each week... as soon as the anxiety starts focus on the positive thought of the week to keep the anxiety at a more tolerable level. Release; yes the anxiety seems to hit like a tidal wave, it comes, it crests and it diminishes. It is very uncomfortable but NOT dangerous. And the more you fight it the more you nourish the fear of the panic (fear of being afraid). The attack lasts from 3 to 5 minutes MAX. the rest is anxiety that can be reduced. THe first few times it is really hard to see any difference... but like any thing that is exercise as you pratice you become better. Do not be discouraged; doubt and low self-esteem only drive the anxiety. Give yourself credit for your efforts. Give yourself credit for trying. One small step at a time will help you intergrate the exercises into a healthy lifestyle and each time you pratice it is a moment to congratulate yourself for a job WELL DONE!

Good afternnon Rose! wow that's quite the story! I am new at this as well and i just joined today! I have experienced panic attacks beofre as well. I have always quit therapies because they weren't working but speak up. Tell them that you still want help and what you want. Be pushy and the outcome will be yours! Kelsey

HI I am new to this forum. I have suffered from severe drepession and panic attacks for the past 7 years. 6 Years ago I was hospitalized and put on effexor. It seemed to work, along with the therapy I recieved while in hospital. About 2 months ago I had a severe panic attack at work, I was taken to hospital and released that same day. I went to see my phychiatrist and he put me in hospital. I was released 4 days later with little therapy, just a change in my meds. i am now now celexa, which doesn't seem to helping. I have been on this new med for about 3 weeks now. I feel hopeless, very depressed, and afraid of the panic attacks that occur 2-3 times a day. I am supposed to go back to work next week, and it terrifies me. I feel the doctor in the hospital did nothing to help me, and he told me he was releasing me because he needed the beds. Never mind about me....
