hi sheba, how many dogs do you have? i think i am drawn to cats because they are more self-sufficient. yeah, i don't think i have the patience anymore to train a pup, and clean up after them. not that i'm not cleaning up after the cats. i've been thinking about locking their cat door at night and keeping them in, because lots of mornings i find moths, lizards, field mice and snakes in the house! you're right about the walking and the security they give you....maybe i'm not over the death of my german shephard - it was so stupid. we lived next to a small restaurant on a busy street that had been robbed and the police asked my dad to leave lady out in the yard to scare away would be thiefs. she got run over. i still have nightmares about that and that was 35 years ago!

Cats are not a big problem the most important thing is not to change their habits when the puppy arrives. And to make clear that they are still the boss :)

thanks sheba - thought about getting another puppy. have 4 cats right now, i wonder how they would react. actually i know, they would all react differently, they're just like people. one of them - the old girl - wouldn't like it at all. my yard is big but not fenced. it's a thought, though, i had a german shepard growing up, i loved that dog! cow tipping - it can be done! i haven't done it myself, but i've seen it. they fall down, wake up and go moo and give you a dirty look! yeah, watch out for those patties.

Hi rose!

I know that will sound really strange but my advice is to get a dog. A golden or lab. It is a great connection to people and a really good motivation to go out. You can even rescue an aduld dog if you feel you can't cope with a puppy for now.

Not only the dog will give you unconditioned love but also you will have someone to care for. And someone that gives you some security going out.

And also you will find out that people relate relly well with you when you are walking your dog. They tend to be friendly and just want to pet him/her and speack with you usually about the dog. How old is he etc.

And you are in the ideal condition to have a dog: fenced yard, lots of place to walk.

well, wildcat, I have been cow tipping and let me assure you that no cows are harmed in the process. It doesn't really work! But we had fun trying to avoid the cow patties and making sure there was no bull hanging around. Jumped a few fences and got close - they just moo and walk off! lol Those were the days......

I've also been snipe hunting ....which is another farce.....wow, us country folk really know how to have fun. Make things up and go try to do it!

That reminds me of some friends... they would tell me that fun meant tipping sleeping cows over when they were sleeping

thanks for reply....not much culture around here - there's a field of cows a mile away? closest downtown area is 50 mile. love your mandala idea. i looked them up, they're beautiful! i'm off to buy some colored pencils....i'll just keep up the walking, concentrate on the job search, and try to keep my head above the water

I would as the therapist about a group for those with anxiety disorders of social phobias. A lot of the discomfort and avoidance you seem to describe I have friends that have done .. I belong to a great group here in Qc called phobies-zero. We meet once a week and the exposure, with exercises, and a supportive environment are really important.

the walks in your neighbourhood are excellent !! the contact you have with people is a good exercise. Now you must keep reprogramming your mind. This is a good exercise, nothing has happened, nothing will happen. Each time you go out and would rather just hide, is a victory against your anxiety. Consciously challenge the anxiety.

I do not know if you would be close to a community center or a book store, but around my way local talent is invited to read from their work and answer questions. We have Maison de la culture (house of culture?) and students of opera and classical music often give their first (free) performances here. Also, we have 4 universities so there are always guest speakers and some sort of vernisage -art stuff on display. Even the high schools have a bunch of stuff going on at all hours.

Does Opra not have her 'book club' thing on-line?

Is there a community calendar that you can refer to for your area? Libraries might have postings, I would ask the librarian if you haven't already. Your local book store might also know of a group, or, you can be pro active and start a book club of your own! Let the local book stores that you are interested in starting a book club, and I'm sure they would be on board and help you in advertising and in recruiting members.

Members, have any of your ever been in a book club? If so, how did you become involved?

hi, how would i find a book club? there isn't one here at local library or any mention of one in local papers. we are kind of in the boonies. in the last month i have considered: al -anon meetings, unitarian church, and codependency anon. group. went to unitarian church 15 yrs ago - didn't stick w/it. went to 3 codependency meetings about 5 years ago - don't like that 12 step stuff. al-anon, maybe, it's only 8 miles away. i know i need to be a little more social, i will never be comfortable with it though. or i reallydon't think i would. in fact, i like to be alone more than i should these days, it used to upset me when my husband would play golf every week w/his "buddies" nowadays, that's even fine by me. i guess i'm really wallowing in it right now!!!!!
