This AM I went to the little fellowship group on the island where I live. The speaker was a guy who works with the homeless in Seattle. His message was about friendship.
One of the things he said was that someone once asked Margaret Mead (the famed anthropoligist) what was the first thing she looked for in determining whether a civilization had been present.
Most people expected her to mention some artifact or some tool or some art object. Her answer was a surprise.
She said "a mended femur" (that's a leg bone for those of you who don't specialize in anatomy).
WHY? Because it was the sign of friendship, the sign of caring, the sign that people had been willing to sacrifice their own time and energies to help another survive. The true sign of a civilized society.
It brought to mind this site, where so many give so much. Thank you all.
