Lady, You are in my thoughts. May your pain be eased by all of us who love you. The question is so true, how can intellegent people do this to themselves and the people they love? I don't understand addiction anymore than most but I know how strong I have had to be not to go back to smoking because it would have been easier than facing withdrawls, but...not everyone is up for the fight, regardless of the pleading of those who love them. Unfortunately, the only thing I can say to comfort you is that we are here for you and will be whenever you need us; as you have always been for everyone else here and I am cetain, in the lives of your friends and family. Lady, sweet lovely lady, I have tears running down my face reading about your dad. How sad you must feel knowing what smoking is doing to someone you love so much. You know he loves you but why wont he quit smoking for you and his grandchildren-that awful addiction ****! My father is also killing himself smoking. I am thankful he lives far away and I dont have to be reminded of it every moment I am at home. My heart breaks thinking about what you must feel. The older generation, I am afraid, are harder to break through to. Lady, You are a very strong person. I know how hard that is to watch. I saw my grandmother do the same thing. She died of cancer in Feb. of '04. Now I see my mother doing the same thing, and yet still my hands are tied. It is so painfull to watch a loved one go through that. When I lived with my mother I hated to hear her coughing. She will not stop either, all we can do is be there for them and hold their hand. My grandmother stopped 2 months before she passed away, and maybe a week befors she passed she said she wished she had never stopped, because after she did she started going down hill fast. She told me and one of my aunts thatif we were going to stop to do it while we were young because at her age the damage is already done. I am not sure she was right, but I belive she felt that she was. I wish you and your family the best, and congrats on your quit. I am glad to be one of the ones who made up my mind and did it. I had someone say you have not even stopped for a month yet why are you so sure of your self and I said because in my heart I have stopped period.I wish you and your family the best, and congrats on your quit. Lady, I know what you are going thru...... My mother is doing the same thing to herself, she is 61, and if she continues to smoke 2+ packs a day, probably won't make it far past 62. She has endured a "forced quit" now for the same amount of time I have quit (40 days) as she is in the hospital and the dr's/nurses won't allow her to smoke. She is angry and bitter at everyone who comes in to visit her, as no one will take her outside. You can imagine her visitors are few and far between now. She will be getting out shortly.......and the first thing she is going to do is light up. After 40 days of not smoking, no NRT's.......cold turkey. Lady, For the first time during my quit, I am starting to see why we all did this to ourselves. We come from a generation where the tobacco companies instilled that it was great to smoke....cool, the in-crowd, sexy. Our parents got hooked strong. We are the first generation to try and pull away from the strong addiction. My biggest surprise so far, is the amount of emotional turmoil the nicotine addiction has caused. It is a battle emotionally getting your brain back to normal. I think most people who don't stay quit can't handle getting back to the normal stage and decide it is easier to smoke. We are the generation who have become educated as to how bad smoking is. Our kids are growing up totally aware so they dislike it even more. I don't fault our parents for not being able to quit. They are victims of tobacco giants. Praise to those who try and succeed and prayers to those who try and can't. Many people in my family have died as a direct or in-direct result of tobacco use. We just have to keep strong ourselves and meanwhile try and teach others we love who smoke to stop before it is too late.
