Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the comments. You're all right, this quit is much more important to me and at this stage I'm probably not completely ready to handle this particular situation alone and under the influence. I can't cancel at this short notice but I will get my resources ready, limit my drinks and have my husband at home. He'll be in another room but will pop his head in and that will give me the added strength and clarity I'll need. He'll also make sure they leave at an appropriate time. I don't need to drink with my friends to enjoy them and that's not all we do together but I do love a bottle of wine once in a while and I don't want change that if I can avoid it. If it's a choice between that and smoking I would sacrifice it (as I have already) as I'm committed to getting off this drug but I'm hoping I can do both eventually (be non-smoker and enjoy a wine around people who smoke). I'm feeling better and stronger about it today. Thanks again!!!! I'm really worried about this Friday night. Any time I've ended up having a smoke when quit has been when I've been drinking so I stopped drinking in particular with certain bestest smoking buddies and it's been great, I haven't smoked and don't want to smoke. I've had a drink here and there with my husband who is a huge anti smoker and been fine too but I'm scared at how overwhelmed with wanting to smoke I feel when I drink with these particular friends who are of course my closest friends. Many many many many hours wiled away with bottles of wine and cigarettes around the kitchen table listening to music and laughing with these people. I have our bookclub this Friday night which is unavoidable and I'm really winding myself up about it as I don't want to smoke but don't know if I'm going to do a complete turn around like I have in the past as soon as I have more than 1 glass of wine. It is as least at my house so the smokers will have to smoke outside and I'll have one quit buddy with me although she's relapsed about 3 times in the last 6 weeks when she's been drinking! My girlfriends know how hard I'm working on this quit and are supportive. I'm going to tell them not to give me a cigarette under any circumstances so that I have to take the responsibility of buying a whole pack myself if it comes to that (that means time to think about what I'm doing + admitting to the shopkeeper that I'm smoking again!!) and I'm going to print some of the stop smoking material that has really helped and keep that in my room so I can go read it if I need to. My husband has also agreed to come home at a moments notice if I need extra reinforcements (it's a girls night book club). All this is great BUT I know that there's a likely chance that once I get merry on the drink I'm not going to activate any of these safeguards....or at least I haven't in the past and THATS what I'm worried about. It would mean the world to me to get through this Fri night without smoking - a huge turning point in my quit... I think I'd just about howl at the moon with happiness but the Dr Hekyll / Mr Hyde thing I have going on alcohol especially with these smoking buddies really frightens me. I know I should be able to do this and that these friends are supportive of me quitting a

c little good luck.. Friday I have only had one drink at a time with non smoking friends over the past 3 weeks. I have even not seen or been with my very best friend because she smokes and I know I am not ready for that temptation, yet. She is supporting me and we have a trip planned at the end of the month and she promised not to smoke. (she is a social smoker). Not and addict, like me. You will be able to enjoy a drink again ... just make sure you are ready. I drank this last weekend and it was probably the biggest temptation I had since hell week. I'm glad my hubby and friends were with me. They gave me added strength. If anything could make me loose my quit ... it would be alcohol ... it drops inhibitions. Chicken L: You're not equipped to handle this situation yet. Avoid drinking for awhile and just enjoy the company of your friends. Your MUST protect your quit no matter what. And this is a WHAT! Chicken, I have not read all the responses you got so I may be repeating what someone else has already said.DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL THIS FRIDAY Let me repeat. DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL THIS FRIDAY. You KNOW that your guard will be down if you have alcohol.DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL THIS FRIDAY. Why put yourself in that situation? Remember Not One Puff Ever-N.O.P.E.You say your friends will smoke outside,DON'T GO OUT THERE WHEN THEY'RE SMOKING. Maybe when they see your determination to be free from nicotine, it will plant a seed in their minds..who knows? In the meantime, take a deep breath of fresh air and find your list of reasons to stay smoke-free and read it, and then read it again. Then come back to this site on Saturday (or late Friday) and tell us how proud you are that you resisted temptation!! Trudy p.s.DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL THIS FRIDAY. And N.O.P.E. Chicken Licken, I completely understand your need to get through a drinking situation without smoking to finally feel like an ex-smoker. For me, that was the BIGGEST trigger and the toughest one to get through because of the loss of inhibitions. I threw away a 132 day quit at a bar nearly 8 months ago and would have been celebrating 1 year quit this coming Saturday, June 17th if I hadn't blown my quit. I know how badly it feels to throw a quit away while drinking and I don't want to see that happen to ANYBODY!!!!! So, PLEASE, don't let that happen! But at the same time, the longer you wait to get through this trigger, the harder it will be. If you think you're ready, and are confident that you won't smoke, then go for it. BUT, if you're thinking now that there's a possibility that you might smoke, then don't risk your quit. Here's the thing... each time I "slipped," I went into the situation thinking "maybe I'll have just one" or "if it gets too hard, I'll just smoke 1/2 of one" or something like that. If you're thinking that maybe, just maybe, you'll smoke, then do whatever you can to avoid the situation!!! Because if you're thinking that maybe you'll smoke before you even get in the situation, then you WILL smoke when you get in it! Make sure that your commitment is as strong as steel going in. That may take some prep work and some "pumping up" to do before hand, but it's absolutely imparative that you tell yourself "NO WAY!!" before hand so you can be strong in the situation. The biggest thing to remember is MODERATION!!!! If you have to drink, then have one... two max and absolutely no more whatsoever!!! The reason alcohol is such a dangerous thing is because #1 - it is so closely tied with smoking and #2 - you're not in a sound mind because of it. So, it's absolutely imparative that you limit the amount that you drink. Even good, supportive friends who are smokers may "forget" that you asked them to not give you a cigarette if they too have drank too much themselves. So just remember to cut yourself off after one or two and leave it at that. Good luck and let us know how it goes! Crave the Quit! Chicken, do you HAVE to drink to enjoy your friends? Drinking is such a strong trigger and many a quit has been lost when inhibitions are down. I think you have to figure out your priorities. Is your quit important to you? Then you should do whatever it takes to protect it. If that means not drinking, then so be it. There have been several threads on the SSC about becoming mature and growing up. I think that applies here. How will you feel on Saturday if you blow nearly 50 days? If it would "mean the world to you" and if you indeed have a "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde thing going on with alcohol, it seems to me the answer is clear. Chicken....read through your post....you make it sound like there is going to be someTHING missing because you "can't" smoke that night. First you need to remember that quitting is a 'choice'....next you need to consider if you are subconsciously trying to find excuses to backslide and smoke at this party???? Your thinking about going smokeless at this celebration is negative....get the positive going. You and your one non smoking friend are the only two really smart people at this party?? it will be too bad that the rest of them have to go outside to have a hit of nicotine. They can't set calmly and enjoy your party without it cause they are practicing addicts. don't fall into this trap! There is NO reason for you to flounder and loose your quit. Think Positive!! Tell them ALL to keep their smokes out of sight and to please limit their trips out. Don't allow alcohol to be taken outside while they smoke. The party is INside and it is a smokefree occasion. It will do you all good to gather in a smokefree atmosphere. And don't allow yourself to think you can't have fun without smoking OR drinking! You know better than that! I've seen people be their silliest on ice tea with a twist of lemon---LOL Get your mind straight BEFORE the party. and I am betting that you will be just fine!!
