I quit smoking exactly 1 month ago, I went through the usual first couple days of going crazy and then just got over it...but Then..something started to happen to the way I talk...I'm a southerner and usually talk slow and very understandable...but after not smoking for a month I TALK REALLY FAST and sometimes jumble words..almost stuttering at times...and then I remembered something...I USE TO DO THIS WHEN I WAS A KID...when I was younger I'd have to really think about what I was going to say in order to not jumble the words together..I guess I stopped doing it when I started smoking...the strange effects of Nicotine eh??? well..I couldnt handle it anymore...i was getting borderlne paranoid of speaking to people, and in my line of work (police officer) you cant sound like a word jumbling idiot...just doesnt work...so I smoked a cigarette....OK i smoked 3 total today...but my language has gone back to "normal" normal slow talking, not jumbled words or talk to fast to understand....Any recommendations...I'd really rather not start smoking again...but...I gotta be able to talk understandabily...

Hi I really thought I had a problem talking too - found it very difficult to get my words out right - but my husband said that I sounded OK to him, so I think somehow, the sound of my voice was getting amplified in my head - maybe due to some small tubes clearing? Anyway - you are not alone, I also experienced speech probs (real or imagined) but DO NOT SMOKE - go see a doctor instead. Nicotine....I don't mean to be rude here but what the heck is wrong with you? You have 30 days under your belt and you smoke???? For what purpose???? SPEACH?????? And since you smoked, you are speaking better now? That junkie thinking has really gotten a hold of you and taken over. I suggest you step back, re-evaluate why you quit, look at how far you have come in the past 30 days and start being honest with yourself. Kick the junkie thinking to the curb. We are all addicts...as Addicts we can justify anything. You have just done a fine job of justifying giving up your quit! Get rid of those cigarettes...they don't help you speak better....they KILL you. Nicotine, It's well known around here that 30 days is a ROUGH time period in a quit... we call it the 30 day pit. It sounds like you got in the pit and instead of coming here for support BEFORE you lit up, you rationalized smoking the best way you knew how... speach. I too have had some speach difficulties since quitting but I NEVER would have thought of giving up my quit for it. Mine was the opposite... I used to speak VERY fast and I also had a bunch of nervous habits and I always thought that if I didn't smoke, I would have more nervousness, but actually the opposite happened... I now speak slower and have WAAAAAAY fewer nervous habits... strange, huh? But anyway, I know what you're talking about. I would suggest having a meeting with a speach pathologist who might be able to give you some tips on controlling your speach. We all CAN control our speach... it's just that we usualy don't think about it and habit takes over to where we just talk however we are acustomed to. However, you can train your brain to be acustomed to talking differently... I know this for a fact. So you might talk with someone to see what steps you can take (other than smoking) to correct this problem. Whatever you do, smoking is NOT the answer. That is simply the junkie inside you screaming for a fix. Yes, the 30 day mark sucks... so take some time to be nice to yourself and reward yourself for 30 days WITHOUT using a cigarette as a reward!!! Smoking will only kill you. Crave the Quit! I ditto what Lady says! But I do want to tell you that I too had a very hard time concentrating and couldn't even think of completing or starting the simplest of tasks. This has started to get better for me just this week. I believe it is our brains adjusting to the lack of dopamine and other chemicals. We have to give our bodies time to adjust metabolically and it doesn't happen overnight. I just kept telling myself to be patient. It was going to get better and it was going to be worth it. I only did what was absolutely necessary. Everything else got put on the backburner. Sounds like the Nicodemon took advantage and sneaked in the back door. This addiction is very sneaky. It's a choice!
