Why do we do it?

It is good to focus on the nastiness (and really, there's a lot there) of smoking to quit this addiction. But none of us smoked because of that. We all know it. The manufacturers know it. I have a friend who was addicted to heroin in Viet Nam. Coping, oblivion, euphoria were some of his reasons for injecting a nasty needle into his veins. At the time, I'm sure he enjoyed it. I enjoyed smoking. I really did. But it controls me in so many ways that I'm just too scared to light one up again. My day to day life is turned inside out without it. It sucks. But that's addiction. Ugh. While I still think we should ban the manufacture and distribution of tobacco, I am glad that society is beginning to look at smoking like heroin. It's helping me to get it together. I know I don't post often, but some of you may know me. To the smoker: Do you like the way your teeth are yellow? Do you enjoy the times it is hard to breath? Do you cherish the thoughts of lying in a hospital bed? Do you look forward to the day when your children learn to smoke? Do you like coughing up that nasty junk? Do you like being controlled by a rolled up pile of weeds? Sounds stupid huh....and yet we keep sticking it in our face. So WHY?? Because we are addicts. We have to remind ourself how horrible our outlook probably will be if we don't beat it. I am so thankful that I am free. I pray that every person who wants to be free of the monster called tobacco will be able to beat it too. Do it for you. Do it for your spouse. Do it for your kids. YOU are in control.
