Smoking Falls Off Dramatically in U.S.
It went on to say-
The government has determined that there has been a 20 decline in smokers in the US in the last 2 years. Get this - Only 378 Billion cigarettes were sold in the US in 2005. That equates to 50% of what the consumption was in 1948, when the population was half of what it is today.
The research attributes the decline to the $240 Billion settlement, hence the higher cost of cigarettes, restrictions on advertising, and a shift in public perception as the dangers of smoking are more aggressively and widely publicized.
The goal by 2010 is to have only 17% of the youths and 12% of the adults still smoking. 21.7% of high schoolers still smoke, as do 20.9% of adults.
