This is my bijillionth time quitting smoking so I've learned a substantial bit about my potholes. I used to come home from work and crack a beer and start chain smoking and keep the beers flowing because I can't smoke one after another without keepin' the pipes lubed with suds. Many nights I'd rinse and repeat until I was tired enough to sleep. My last quit, and really all of the substantial ones (more than a day or so), have seemingly been foiled by drink. I don't really have much of a desire to drink without smoking now. Partially because I know it makes me loose and more prone to give in to temptations and I want this quit to stick. I see a lot of recovering alcoholics on this site and I'm curious if you have any insight. Does it seem like my prior behaviors are indicative of alcoholic behavior and is it just a matter of time before I drink one too many and cave to the nicodemon. Or do you think as long as I'm conscientious of my weakness and moderate it, I can still enjoy an occasional drinking night out with the boys. I've drank a few nights during this quit. The first night was about 2 weeks in and I came dangerously close to caving because of the environment. I was camping with friends. We were having a few cold ones around the campfire and one of the guys had some tobacco and papers. I actually asked for one at one point because I was sick of the internal turmoil. Fortunately, his first response was 'no.' But, then he said,"well, if you really want one..." I didn't and I knew it. I guess I just needed to hear no outside of my own head. But since then, I've been out a couple of times and had no real desire to smoke - maybe there were more distractions. I'm curious as to the opinions of those who have walked this path before me. I am looking for guidance in my new smoke free life. I want permanence in my decision to quit. If it means I can't drink, then so be it. Anyway, if you read these ramblings, bless you and best wishes on your journey. I'd appreciate any comments. stu

Fish, I am a recovering alcoholic and have not touched alcohol in almost 14 years. None of us can tell you if you are alcoholic or not. That is a decision you must make for yourself, much like no one can tell us to quit smoking we have to want to quit smoking for ourselves to be successfull. I think Casey had it right when suggesting the alcoholhelpcenter.net. I personally went to Alcoholics Anonymous for a number of years and had face to face support with that problem. For me that was a lot easier to quit than smoking, but both can be done with the right attitude and the right support. For support in stopping smoking you are in the right place. Sometimes the posts are pretty strong, but the intent typically is to help, even if they are a slap in the face. Sometimes that slap is exactly what we need to get ourselves straight in the head. We are all behind you Fish and you can do it if you really want to. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi fish, I recently had a girls night out and knew that there would not only be smokers there but, drinking as well. I wasn't really worried so much about the drinking as I was the smoking. For some reason, My husband and I both can drink and not crave a smoke. I'm not sure if we just don't associate one with the other or what the reason. I sure enjoy a drink now and then and feel fortunate that I can do so w/out feeling a need to smoke. Everyone is different though. If you feel that it will jeopordize your quit then definately don't tempt fate w/ drinking. Good luck in your quit My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 13 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 401 Amount Saved: $91 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 23 Mins: 49 Seconds: 31

That's a big ten four good buddy.....the smoke/drink combo can be way too pleasant. I gave up the chardonny for diet iced green tea. This is NOT a recommendation, simply a healthy alternative. I did not have issues with alcohol. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 179 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,580 Amount Saved: $895 Life Gained: Days: 23 Hrs: 14 Mins: 35 Seconds: 56

Fish, If you click here you will go to a thread I started about how to keep your quit and still go out drinking. I lost a 132 day quit at a bar because I thought that I was strong enough to handle it and didn't prepare at ALL for it. It IS possible to socialize with friends and drink, but you do have to be careful. For many of us, drinking and smoking go hand in hand, so it makes sense that this is a very tough trigger to overcome and you will need to do some preperation work before hand in order to do this successfully. Help this thread helps you. Crave the Quit! I'm not a good one to answer this one but I will tell you what I have done which is NOT drink, since I quit I gave up drinking, I wasnt a big drinker anyway but I feel my quit is more important than drinking. I did have a glass of wine on new years day, my first in 8 months, it wasnt bad but I wont temp myself too often. Good luck with your drinking but remember to protect your quit, that is really whats important. Congratulations on quitting that is wonderful.
