GPW, Don't worry so much its not good for the body.
Anyone can get cancer. I personally know of 5 people who developed cancer & never smoked, 3 of these people where real heath nuts. i know of many smokers & ex-smokers who havn't developed cancer. life is a gamble, you can't go through life waiting for something to happen.
Statistics... you need to realise that smokers are easy targets. Manipulated Statistics & 'scare tacticts' are common order of the day as anti smoking lobbies struggle to target the smoking especially the youth, so i wouldn't go believing all the statistics you read, however any anti smoking campaign is a good one especially if it stops people smoking as it is bad for you & nicotine addiction is no fun. Search the web if you want to know more.
if i was you i would go visit a different doctor if it worries you, if only for piece of mind but honestly you'd know if you had emphysema, you'd be constantly out of breath & need an oxygen supply handy i don;t see the point worrying about your DNA, a sausage can alter your DNA but it doesn't stop people eating them!.
FYI, environmental factors can effect our lives ie, .i was diagnosed with athsma (by a doctor who used test equipment) but it turned out i was just living in a damp house, i moved house athsma no more.
I used to worry all the time & it's just not worth it, it pays to enjoy the hand that life deals you. even better if you don't rely on smokes to get you through.
i hope this helps
