Why people slip...

Please God, make it stop! No, not these horrible cravings (well, on second thought...those too), but this incessant banter about "slipping". Let's get on with our quits and quit whining about "slips"

Hi Celia I agree with you on the "slips". Never say die, say damn! Just get back on track and keep on trying, no matter how many times we don't "get it right" (or "slip" or whatever you want to call it!) The wording doesn't matter. The end result is what counts, no matter how we get there. Annie

Congratulation, Celia, those stats look grand on you. Also, that was a good point you made about slipping. It doesn't have to be the end of a quit. Reward yourself well next month. A year is huge :) NOPE, Janet My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 235 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,719 Amount Saved: $1175 Life Gained: Days: 31 Hrs: 2 Mins: 55 Seconds: 46

To follow on from Lady's post about slipping, I just wanted to add a really important point. Before I first came to the SSC in April last year, I had smoked for 13 years and had tried to give up maybe 4 or 5 times, never succeeding for more than a few days. I HAD GIVEN UP ON GIVING UP and that was what I used to say to people. It may sound silly to those of you who are so well researched and experienced, but I had never considered that in effect I had "fallen off the wagon" and could easily get back on it just by NOT lighting the next cigarette and continuing my attempt at becoming a non-smoker. I always felt like, "Oh dear, for whatever reason I failed, that makes me a smoker again." What I am trying to say is that after smoking the first cigarette of each "quit" attempt, I immediately put off the idea of quitting for a few years. The SCC gave me hope as I finally looked at it in a different way: If you do "slip" it does not mean your quit has failed, it just means you have to keep going through the beginning bit until you do succeed. And it's easy to say with hindsight, but surely it would be easier to just go through those horrible first few hours, days, weeks without a cigarette ONCE rather than more times?!!! I used to be a serial "slipper", even last year it took me 3 months til I succeeded. The Allen Carr book really helped me to see that I should celebrate losing an enemy rather than grieve the loss of a friend. It didn't work that way for the serial slipper I live with, but he has set a new quit date on 30th March - Katy I won't mention smoking to him this time, I know this is what he wants, we are so different in that way!!! Fingers crossed anyway. Celia, I think you've had a really important insight that has been missed here: that once we failed at our attempt to quit, we didn't know to just "jump right back onto the wagon" but instead we gave up. I had never thought of it that way and I think it's not only true, but a KEY to understanding how to quit successfully. I also disagree with others that by nurturing folks who have relapsed, we are helping them to believe that it's okay to relapse. I don't think anyone takes it lightly. I DO think that we can help nudge people back on the wagon who would otherwise have put off the idea of quitting. It's true that slipping goes on....but it isn't part of a successful quit. the main reason for slipping is cause you are an "ADDICT"....and instead of addressing that one fact, slippers will usually try to rationalize, reason, or excuse the slip. and as long as you talk about slipping...you are talking about smoking! new members see all this and get the impression that a few slips in a quit are fine, even expected. That isn't the case! and there is no truth that you have to slip to have a successful quit!! dwelling on slipping is about like dwelling on cravings.....of course they occur....but the object is to NOT do it. not to excuse it but not DO it! Posts about slipping should be about how to avoid it.....not how to excuse it. we need to begin to dwell on quits withOUT slips. in fact, back when I started, there were far more quits without slips than with them.....and some of that had to do with the attitude about slipping. It was not ok...it wasn't reasoned out....it wasn't part of quitting......period polkadot. no, we don't beat up slippers...but neither should we rally round and 'ok' the slips. We crush them and move ON. to much discussion about slipping makes it common ground for a quitter.....and it shouldn't be and if you read this as taking anyone to task then you are reading it wrong....but we ALL need to leave slipping in the dirt Katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1532 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 61,290 Amount Saved: $8426 Life Gained: Days: 199 Hrs: 20 Mins: 42 Seconds: 9
