Advice Needed on Last Hurdle

Hi, Ron. I agree that the biggest challenge mowing presents is the boredom. I used to have a 4 acre place, so I understand spending a long time on a riding mower. Finding something to do with your mind while mowing is an excellent idea. I'm pretty sure noise is why headphones won't work. If you could turn the music up high enough to hear you'd probable be doing hearing damage. Keep in mind that everytime we get through a smoking situation smoke-free it reduces the association between smoking and that activity. I don't know when your summer work begins, but you will be further into your quit than you are now and more experienced, so that will help some. You want very much to keep this quit. That will help immensely. Congratulations on 36 smoke-free days, Ron. :) Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 329 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,591 Amount Saved: $1250.2 Life Gained: Days: 61 Hrs: 10 Mins: 34 Seconds: 33
Why can't you put the phone and pager on vibrate?
Pam, you've never been on a riding mower have you? That would be like standing next to a jet taking off and trying to hear someone snap their fingers. :) Now maybe if he strapped them to his chest... Hang on, Ron. We'll eventually solve all your problems. You just may have to be a bit open-minded, lol. Hi, Ron. Hummy's right about the straw. I cut a straw that was about the diameter of a cig to the length of a cig, then folded and crimped the "fire" end until it had about the same resistance as a cig when I sucked on it. Made a great prosthetic, I could "smoke" anywhere & anytime, cheap (Cracker Barrel straw), and lasted almost forever (until I dropped it on the floor and the dog chewed it up). I called it my "strawerette". Hiljump, that was Karate Kid. Wax on, wax off, wash the car, paint the fence. Hey Ron, I believe 2 of the best coping mechanisim's is being honest with yourself and telling on the junkie when it "tries" to mess with you. You're already doing both of those :) Drink lots of water this summer :) The sugar from the lolly pops, etc, might dehydrate you? Anyhow...when u wake up in the morning say your prayers and picture yourself out there healthy as the smoke-free/non-smoker that u are, getting in gr8 shape working and drinking lots of water. Ok maybe think about that scene in "Sex And the City" where where what's her name "the brunette", get's it on with the gardner, LOL. Whatever it takes, just don't turn into a stinky smoker again,,,yuk! No matter what don't lite up... Keep on keepin on... Ron: I think you have a great idea by preparing ahead of time for expected craves. There is no better way to overcome a craving other than preparing and just staring it right in the face and saying "I am going to do something else beside smoke!" And sometimes just getting your mind set will help when everything else fails.... You may have already thought of this, but a friend of mine also does alot of lawn care and he always kept toothpicks in his pocket and he chewed on them all day long.....(It worked for him...He has been smoke free for 3 years) Stay Strong Ron......I think your gonna do fine.....You have a great "forever quit" going on...And I promise, it does get easier... Hi Ron, Ideas from 3 members of the SSC that may help. Beautiful and simple: Mirbah: BREATH - it is important. Sometimes all you can do is say, yes I want a smoke and no I am not having one now. N.O.P.E. not one puff ever. Golferman: Your slips are caused by a number of factors on the outside, but inside they are really only caused by the simple lack of commitment. At least that is how I see it. When you are completely committed to something, anything, then no amount of temptation will cause you to lose your focus. Smokers tend to call it junkie thinking. That's as good a title for it as any I suppose. In reality, you are questioning your commitment to your quit and you rationalize smoking. Newbkr: (from a book on race training) YOURE NOT MAKING A DECISION WHETHER TO SMOKE WITH EACH CRAVING. THE DECISION GETS MADE ONCE. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO NOW IS WHATEVER IT TAKES TO FOLLOW THROUGH ON THAT DECISION. YOU KNOW ITS THE RIGHT DECISION. DO NOT LET A CRAVING MAKE YOU DOUBT IT. --If you get tired of gum and toothpicks, try sucking on straws. Worked for me think Shevie may have used them, too. Good luck! Not cravin', never cavin'. Easy....Sing! I realize you do this for a living so mowing isn't the fun thing for you that it is for me. We have a large piece of property, and "his and her" mowers. I love to mow! It relaxes me, it takes me to another place where I can't hear anybody and nobody can jabber at me. And I sing! Some days my repertoire is Beatles songs or Pink Floyd or made-up words to opera. Sometimes I sing hymns. So when you get a craving on the mower, belt it out like Ethel Merman! Ron, You make a valid point. You do have to find what works for you on that mower. A chew stick or cinnamon stick may help. Perhaps headphones with you favorite music can assist you. I have read the great advice from other members, choose what you need and keep it close. We are always here for you, Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
