Good news and bad news but.....

Hi Joonie I am sorry to hear your results but pleased to hear that this has made you more determined to stick to your quit. Hopefully there will be no further deterioration. As for the way that he wrote a letter to send your results, telephoning you would have been better. On Sat i had a letter from my hospital stating that there was a change to my cells, and i was worried sick, esp as i couldnt even ask my doctor about it until Monday. Hopefully now that you have quit your health will not deteriorate further, but i do agree with you, there is no better motivation to stay quit than a health scare that is relating to smoking. Its only when it happens to you, that you realise the damage it does, otherwise most of us are guilty of thinking that this is something that happens to other people. Not us. Best wishes with your quit.

Joonie - here's hoping all good things for you tomorrow. Ask the Doc as many questions as necessary for you to understand. It's his job to help you and educate you if explanations are needed. Hi All, Tomorrow I go to the doctors office to find out what the results mean. I'm hoping for an education....Finally! I agree that that is not a great way to tell you, and you know, we have to demand better to get better here in the U.S. The doctors are not accountable to anybody. My Mom's doctor just sent a form letter with the diagnosis code and it turned out to be COPD. Many hours of research on the internet later, I made an appointment with this doctor and we went in and told him, we are not paying for an office visit, or anything else. He finally agreed that this was not the way for us to find out. Keep us informed Joonie. I did not think emphysema was reversible either. My Mom has it and there is nothing she can do about it to make it go away. And she never even smoked. I agree with you that telling you something like that in a letter is pretty unprofessional. Hang in there Joonie. Joonie, Ok, here's the 411: ??You're trachea' connected to your bronchus, your bronchus connected to you bronchioles, your bronchioles are connected to alveoli...?? and that's where we encounter the biggest smoking related problem. In your lungs, we have many alveoli. The alveoli is where gas exchange takes place. When you smoke, you're putting toxins in your lungs. Your immune system responds to the presence of these toxins and stimulates an immune response. This immune response includes inflammation, inflammation causes mucus formation, mucus formation, leads to blockages and infection which stimulates a stronger immune response. (These blockages and infections usually are taken care of by your immune system before they become too severe for you to notice) The increased immune response releases enzymes to break down infection and mucus. These enzymes also damage the alveoli. Eventually, the alveoli and bronchioles become so damaged from this immune response cycle that it becomes increasingly harder for them to expell the air that comes in on inspiration. Some of the air becomes trapped and the alveoli eventually ruptures. For every alveoli that bursts, that's less surface area your lungs have to do gas exchange. (result: emphysema) The degree of damage determines the abnormalities reported in your pulmonary lung function test as this is what it tests for; how well your lungs exchange gas. As for your question, the damage can be reversed because your lungs will now have a chance to heal properly without having this immune response constantly undoing all the work it's done to heal. The downside is you won't grow new alveoli but I gather your doctor was trying to imply that the damage you've experienced as a result of being a smoker is not severe. By the way, just because you don't feel out of breath doesn't mean your lungs haven't compensated for your smoking by increasing your respiration rate. ;) I hope this helps and gives additional motivation to maintain your quit. Hi, Thank you for the responses and the super information. Honestly, I would not have asked for the tests had I not wanted to face the results. But I do have a major problem with my doctor's methods and will be looking for another one soon. I called his office after receiving my "diagnoses letter" to ask for a more detailed explanation of the results (or heck, just the actual results!) cause everything on the web pertaining to emphysema or COPD urges the patient to get familiar with their test result numbers, and I haven't heard back yet. Basically I am pretty disappointed. Normally, I am pretty laid back and in the past would most likely have not said a thing to my doctor. I would have been too intimadated to ask and would have just taken his word for not needing to understand the intricacies of my health. But with my quit, the results and being in my late forties, I am finally speaking up!!! I am finally getting it! We only have one go around (that I know of) and we don't always have to put everyone first all the time! Sorry, got kind of side tracked. On the flip side, I do feel extremely lucky as my news could have been ten times worse! Thanks for your concern about my motivation (or lack of motivation) to stay quit. I quit smoking before thinking of having all the tests not because of any results. I have no plans on losing this quit! :) Also, I went to my Ladies group last night and wasn't even tempted (and there were some ladies smoking)....even with the news of my, not the best outcome, results. Hooray for me! things could be a LOT worse. I finally received a letter from my doctor concerning the pulmonary function test that I took two weeks ago. Anyway, I am not happy with his idea of reporting my results. He stated in the letter that the tests indicated that I have mild emphysema and that with time, and with the continuation of not smoking, that my pulmonary function will improve. That was it. Nothing else. Okay, let's hold the phone here folks. I have always heard that once you are diagnosed with this type of cronic disease that stopping smoking will keep the disease from progressing at the current (accelarated) rate but that also the damage from emphysema is irreversible. So anyway, I called his office to ask for an accurate description of the results including the meaning of each of the values resulting from each test performed. I haven't even gotten the actual test results from him! Granted, I did this to myself but I certainly have the right to know to what degree I have compromised my lungs and ability to breathe. You know, I am really, really not happy with his idea of how to inform patients of their conditions. The funny thing is, you know, this could have all been a lot worse and with a much more pressing, permanent outcome. I consider myself very lucky tonight. But, for all you folks on the fence about quitting here is a tidbit for you to seriously consider about why you should stay quit....I have never felt out of breath or had a chronic cough and very, very rarely come down with a cold. And look at what I have smoked myself into. Think about it, is that cigarette really all that important? Whew, I am glad I asked for these tests. Just more fuel for my desire to keep from smoking. Thanks for letting me vent.
