SUGGESTIONS WELCOMED....

Hi Cheermom Ian and I have a totally different quit as well. We're both a lot more irritable at times, I'm more emotional. It's not easy, because sometimes we can't be there for another, because we're both dealing with our own stuff the best we can. But one thing that is a given, we're both as determined. Think you should just have a word with hubby, see where he stands. Tell him what you're worried about. You've done it so far, and I'm sure you're strong enough to get through this holiday. It's just another hill to climb, and remember, it can be done! Brenda, try and enjoy the break, hope you will! Hi, I just went on vacation. I was going to be around some smokers too. Cybrduke's suggested I write myself a note promising myself not to smoke at least until I returned from trip, so I did. I brought an electronic solitare game, electronic yazee game, my nintendo dx, three relaxation/stop smoking cd's, four books on not smoking, a big bag of sunflowerseeds, my bike and weight to work off stress. I know you may not be in a situation where you can bring your bike or even all this stuff. But the main thing was I got myself prepared for temptation, I was armed and ready to do battle if necessary, and I was determined not to smoke. I also keep a positive attitude and just started off the conversation with every smoker like this: No, I don't smoke anymore. I was tired of waking up every morning coughing so hard I was gagging myself and boy don't I feel better. I can breath again, everything smells so great. I went on and on about all the benefits. By the time I was done it was obvious in their face that they wished they were me, two weeks into my quit. Go there and be strong, be determined to keep your quit and be an example. Perhaps your example will be the one thing that saves one of your friends or family members life. Shine. Shine. Shine. Thanks so far for the suggestions. I'm writing them all down as they all seem manageable (except for the bike). Shevie, it is definitely NOT fun quitting with a spouse as we are in counseling because we almost threw our marriage away due to our "attitudes" during our first week of our quit. I am going to talk with him tonight at counseling (he can't take it personal when we are telling each other's feelings in front of counselor lol) about my fears and let him know what they are. I am very anxious about this vacation, and want to thoroughly enjoy it. So keep the suggestions coming as the more ideas I can arm myself with, the better chance at succeeding with my quit AND still enjoying my vacation. Hi all. Some of you know I am getting ready to leave for my vacation (a well needed reward) this Saturday and will not have access to the internet at all the entire 10 days!!! Feeling kind of stressed about a situation that has a high rate of happening: My husband and I quit together in June. I have had ups and downs, he dwells on it. totally different quit. Well we are going on the vacation together and staying with his parents (who do not smoke YEAH!). But my husband's best friend does. We will be seeing him and I'm worried that if my husband starts smoking, I will justify it by saying, "oh well" and start myself. I am worried about my quit, NOT my husband's. I'm worried that I will turn weak in my quit if my husband starts up again. I can't very well avoid my husband as we are on this vacation together. So does anyone have any suggestions for me (and my husband as I send this to him also)? Lady already suggested I print some of the threads here. I have done that but would like other ideas also that people have tried and succeeded while on vacation. Any suggestion will help. Hi Kim - glad to hear things are still going good! Awesome. For vacation (I did not have a vacation but had a business trip) so I took along my journal and just wrote in there whenI felt I needed to vent a little or just "say" what was bothering me. Of course I checked in at home with my quit buddy husband to see how his emotions were running. The journal is a great way to "complain" bigtime without burdening anybody else, and it really makes ya feel better. I hope your trip is fabulous and am relatively sure once you arrive, you will wonder what ya worried about ~ Have a fun/safe time. Hi cheermom, I just returned from being on vacation with a smoker. You will be staying with your husbands parents, who are non smokers..great! When the best friend comes over to visit, he will have to smoke outside, correct??? Don't go outside with him. Maybe you and your hubby could make dates with him to visit places where smoking is not allowed...ie, meet us at a restaurant for dinner, sit in non smoking, he can excuse himself and go to the bar or outside to smoke. Remember that you can have fun; you can relax on this vacation without smoking. Inhaling poisonous gases into your lungs will not make this get away more enjoyable. Stay strong, cheermom! Protect that quit. Speak with your husband about being ready to handle his friends smoking. Come home in victory!!! First, I just want to say something to all you couples that are quitting together. You folks are just amazing! For two people who are in such intimate proximity (physical, emotional, etc.) to be able to go through this ride called a quit together and survive as a couple is, to me, truly astounding. My hat's off to you all. :) Cheermom, you've got some great advice here already. I honestly can't add much to it other than to stress that your quit is yours and his quit is his. I hope he can deal with his friend's smoking and I hope you'll be able to support him through it, or hold your own if he can't. I do think talking this through with him beforehand is a good idea. Perhaps develop a game plan or exit strategy in case he (or you) start to give in. You can do this, cheermom. Stay strong, stay focused on your quit. Hello Cheermom, This all boils down to how mentally strong You are, I believe Everyone goes through these situations of stress and pressure on You, And You just got to grit Your teeth, and get the Eye of the Tiger, Someone says to get a pack of black liquorish, or a milk shake straw, or if the stess is too much, take off for a walk down the street, for its a good stress releiver, But Friend, You know, Everyone is on a roller coaster ride in Your journey and life, and that is eviteable for Everyone, But it seems to always happen just a couple months after You quit smoking, Its like Your being tested by the Nickodemon Who is standing around the corner waiting for You to fail, for He can come running in Your direction, I remember 2 months after I quit on this website, I had younger Brother who suddently had a massive heartattack, and passed away, Well I had to drive 500 miles to go to His visitation, and funeral, and I said to myself, Brother Mike wouldn't want me to have a cigerette just because of His passing, And I've never looked back since, wishing and wanting and hoping, For since then, have always had a real strong positive attitude, and felt like the Rock of Gibraltor, You can do this Friend, Just walk away, For its Your journey, Smokeless In Oklahoma :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/10/2003 Smoke-Free Days: 1225 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 36,770 Amount Saved: $5243 Life Gained: Days: 289 Hrs: 16 Mins: 57 Seconds: 34

I would not risk losing a 40 day quit even for my dear deceased Mother. No one and I repeat...No One, will get at me. Take that position and stick to it. Yes, it is your husbands smoking friend. If he wants to risk it by being around his friend (if friend will not stop for you all), let him live with the results. Yes, it is your quit and you deserve it and no one has the right to cause you to lose it. The word FRIEND is important here. Also, enlisted the help of your in-laws to protect your and his quit. Surely they are extremely proud of the son. Make it a smoke-free event and you will be so very proud of what you have done. You both can do this. I feel it! Cheer, You are right! This is your quit, don't let others influence your choices and keep strong :) Use you copy mechanism and the threads you printed and be prepared. Avoid situations if you can and keep pushing forward, it is not worth it to go back :) Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
