I think I better think about my relationship to my beautiful guitar. Oftentimes I think it is broken until someone else picks it up and makes music come out of it. All I can really do is brag about how beautiful it is.

my relationship with my potential smoke. It now has hit me that my coping mechanisms must kick in long before then.

Bgaines,
That's a great distraction to throw your concentration into. Try to start substituting those romantic thoughts for disgusting negative ones. A little research and a few pictures should help you get started.
Keep persevering,
Danielle

Bgaineshunter,
Distraction is the name of the game! Whenever I started to think in this way about a smoker, I would visualise my dad one week away from his death, virtually a skeleton having always been a fit and muscular man.
That soon put things into perspective for me.
Harsh and extreme maybe, but then again my father always dreamt that I would quit someday.

I hear you. It's kida like looking back at that first girlfrien/boyfriend after many years. They were the best, the sweetest, the nicest, you kinda wonder why it ever ended between you and then you run into them on the street....
They are nothing close to what your memory has made them.....
REALITY CHECK - GET OVER YOURSELF!
The junkie in your head is working on you. Be very aware and don't buy the crap it's telling you. There is nothing "special" about smoking a cigarette unless stinking like death is special to you.
Good work - sounds like your guard is up.....
