Is anyone else feeling some anxiety over the Sept `11 anniversary????

For several months now, I've had a fear of planes nearby. I live 70 miles north of the northern flight path for the busiest airport in the world so the high flying jets overhead are constant and make me slightly nervous. I work just a few miles from an Air Force Base and the fighters sometimes fly by near the ground. I'm on the 5th floor of a building and they shake the entire building. It makes me extremely nervous. I am usually able to rationalize my fear away after a few minutes, but I can relate to you perfectly. I have lately stopped watching as much news, it's not designed to be helpful to people in an emotionally fragile state. Terrible things happen every day in the world, and we as a society tend to overexpose ourselves to them. If you worrying that you're alone, you aren't. I'll be you and I are far from the only people who feel nervous about low flying planes or who get pouding hearts when the footage of those two buildings collapsing is shown. I am not avoiding September 11, but I am facing it with those I love near me and with an attitude that I will not give in to fear. I don't know if that's helpful to you at all, but I hope you find you own way to peace.

Well news programs seldom report good news, and some networks dwell on tragedies and war more than others. Their programming is not necessarily balanced. We know that sensationalizing draws more viewers. All this affects us, but we are the ones with the remote control and the choice to change the channel. Once you hear a news item, do you keep listening until it's repeated over and over? Or do you watch something else after you've heard it once? The tragedies of Sept 11th were very sad, and I'm confident that everyone in North America and other continents examined their sense of vulnerability, just as you seem to be doing. And to a certain point we are watchful and careful. We have to come to some sense of resolution though and balance. Although I don't live anywhere near a flight path, my brother and his family do, in another city close to a large major airport and right in its flight path. When I visit on occasion, I can't help but notice the deafening noise and can't help but give a thought to the danger, but he and his family take it in stride, merely pausing until the plane rises or descends overhead before resuming their conversation. At the start of my short visits, I usually pause to send prayers and good thoughts to the families of all air tragedies at that moment, as well as good wishes to the passengers for a safe flight. As more flights pass, I imagine them all going off on some enviable holiday. My brother's family says that they just tune it out. I did babysit the family for a week though, and by week's end, I too had tuned it out. But you say you're really anxious about it. Have you taken the anxiety test? You say you haven't needed meds for a while. Are you perhaps thinking you may be at a point where it might be a good idea to take them again? We're launching a new panic program just hours away now that will help you face your fears, Elaine. -- Anne-Marie, Site Administrator

Hello All: I am noticing that i am avioding stuff that relates to Sept 11. I used to be able to watch allthe stuff they had been showing , buit when I tried to watch a program about the plane that went down in Penn. I noticed my anxiety went way high. I did not have a panic attack but I felt really uncomfortable about it and did not warch it. I did not know anyone who was personally affected but could watching all that stuff and having it shown all that time be finally getting to me. Also when ever I hear a breaking News story on the TV I jsut about freak I am not kidding. Also we live in the path of our airport.Planes go over us all the time, but I seem so sensitive to it lately. I look up and see them and get really afraid. May be I am just putting this together all wrong. I have no therapist and no insurance since my hubby has been out of work since Jan but I have not seen or needed meds of a therapist for quite a while. Should I avoid all this Sept 11 stuff all together???I know no one here is a therapist just some opinions please Thanks Elaine
