The Way it Use to be

MistyMoon, In reading your story and doing the math, you smoked 75 cigs per day? My word woman! When did you have time to do anything else? Or did you walk around with a cig hanging from your lip during your daily routine? I sometimes did 2 packs per day and my chest would be hurting so much by nightfall. Aren't we glad we quit? I can tell that you are! Nance PS I have a waterbed...but never smoked in the bedroom anyway. On the toilet????? MistyMoonlight, you are singing my song. Smoking punctuated my life and defined it. It took years for me to break the habit of having my first two cigs in bed while I was drifting awake. My husband got up in the middle of the night many many times to smoke and set fires at least once a week by falling asleep dropping the lit cig. My entire being has been trained like a pavlovian dog to respond to stimuli by smoking. When out at a restaurant (none allow smoking) I'd get up right in the middle of dinner and go out to smoke. As smoking got more and more limited, I stopped attending functions and events. I wouldn't even go to a movie. What's more, I was quite happy with the way things were going. It was better to stay home and indulge my habit than it was to go out and be so uncomfortable. You have been 370 days smoke free. You give me hope that the cravings will someday go away. This is a great thread - I'm glad you bumped it because I was just now thinking of some of my "being chained to a smoke" memories. Of course, I was a very very very heavy smoker so I know i have some that others don't. LOL.. I used to lay in bed, have my last cigarette, and then try to force myself to fall asleep within 10-15 minutes. if 15 minutes went by and I wasn't asleep yet, i had to light up again. At the end, in the few months prior to quitting.. one of the reasons I even thought about quitting was that I was lighting up in my sleep and waking up because my leg was burning, and the cig had gone all the way through the sheet and matress pad. UHM SCAREY! I used to light up going into the store, and imediately when I walked out, and was usually feeling withdrawls before I got out of the store. Always smoked in the car, on the toilet, after eating, and while at the computer. There wasn't anywhere that I didn't smoke - I had to.. all the time. Glad to be free of that! Fraid I haven't reached the stage yet where smoking stinks...but today when I walked out of the gym, there was a small group of people standing outside smoking (there is also a restaurant there). As I felt the chill in the air, I thought "Thank God I am not going to have to be standing outside in the snow smoking! Just now as I parked my car and began my walk into the building where I work, I thought to myself this is the time and place where I used to light up each morning. Now that I think about it, this particular memory had not crossed my mind in several weeks or 2 or 3 months? I cant quite remember the time frame. While walking in I thought back, about when I would dragged on the smoke, how my lungs felt really tight , I would get winded and I felt lousy. I am so grateful that I no longer desire a smoke on the way in; I am shamed to think that I allowed myself to smoke and damage my body for all those years. When I see people smoke, it really pains me, especially if they are dragging heavy. I wish I could make them aware and get them to stop; but that is not in the cards. For you though it is in the cards, you are here helping yourself and others just like us. We can and will do this together, rid ourselves of the constant habit that is a thorn in our lives. Do you want to share a smoking memories with us that hadnt come to mind in a while? Excellent thread Stickin. I often find it disheartening for me when i see my good friends & family smoke, watch the faces they pull and the displeasure in the drag, they dont see it ~ i never saw it in me when it were me. I quit at the most perfect time for me and i although it is hard for me to understand the want and the need that those who remain smokers, i also know that their perfect time will also come for them too. We are FREE... PrincessC :) x

Hi Marie, In this country it is no use to ask anyone to change the age for buying cigarets. In this country they allow 16 year olds to smoke weed and other stuff. They let us watch commercials on TV that tell us how bad smoking is and on the other side they get a lot of money from the taxes. They also tell people how difficult it is to quit smoking, but they are afraid that people WILL quit and then they cannot have the money from the taxes. Confusing???? To me it isn't......
