Hi, Jadede. From what you say, it sounds like your friend could benefit from our free online Panic Program. It is a treatment program that she can use. -- Anne-Marie, Site Administrator

From my experience panic attacks need treatment from specialists. General practitioners tend to have little understanding of panic and don;t know the available medication as well as specialists. I saw a general practitioner for a while when I didn't have insurance and I basically went in to his office and told him what to prescribe for me.

Dear Jadede, How are you? More appropriate to ask, how is your friend? I hope you have gone to visit her and she is doing better. There is nothing better than a friend that is there for you when the 'chips' are down. If she cannot come to you, go to her - ease her fears and be the friend that maybe, someday, you will need her to be for you. Fondly from the USA, Maria

Michele, Thanks for your reply. I really really appreciate it. I have not told my friend that she needs to see a specialist yet. She believes whatever her doctor tells her 100 %, so I am being very careful about what I say to her... I am very new to this and obviously don't know much about panic attacks. I do not even know if what I read on the internet is right or what her doctor tells her is right. She has been looking for a different doctor in Japan but I hear treatment for mental illness is not as advanced as it is in the U.S. You are right, I will make an appointment with a local doctor here and get an advice for my friend. When my friend told me that she doesn't think she can come visit me again, I didn't even know what to say... It's easy for me to say "you are fine!" but I know it's not for her. I wish I lived closer to her... I feel useless. Thank you again Michele

Can your friend go to another doctor? Perhaps one who would be willing to research for her if he/she is not a speciaist? The doctor could e-mail a specialist in the U.S. Could you possible talk to a local doctor where you live about this situation or send some information to her so she could bring to her doctor? A good friend is a great thing and you could be helping your friend to the road to recovery. I am not familiar with the medical culture towards mental illness in Japan so I hope I have given you some ideas. It is important she gets treatment and not become housebound. Michele

Hello, I'm Jade. I have a friend who has suffered panic disorder for 6 months in Japan. She can't get on a train or bus because she is scared. She quit her job because she can't commute. The problem is that it's so hard for her to get a proper treatment in Japan. Her doctor tells her not to think about it at all. He does not specialize in Panic Disorder. He just gives her Xanax and sends her home everytime she comes in. No counseling. I just don't know if I should tell her that she won't get better unless she sees a specialist and get a proper treatment. Her doctor tells her something completely different. I would appreciate any advice. I just want her to feel better and come visit me in the US again. I miss her so much.... Jade
