Do you ever feel like you are abandoning a sinking ship?

ROFLMA Coben! So glad I didn't make my hairdresser mad! What was I thinking! Just got back from the hairdresser's who is a smoker. She didn't know that I had quit. She started talking about smoking and I mentioned that I was on patch. (I really feel bad for smokers and I remembered how if felt when somebody had quit while I was a smoker) I felt kind of guilty (like I had just jumped on the last life boat and her ship was going down). I also didn't really know the right things to say. She said she didn't have the willpower to quit and how she had never made it longer than afew days. I agreed that the first couple weeks are awful but that it gets better and said that I had just got tired of smoking getting in the way. I definately didn't want to be negative...because those kind of people did nothing for me. I wish I would have told her that I didn't think that I had the willpower either. I didn't want to be a "born again" non-smoker...but didn't want her to think that she couldn't do it..... Guess I just felt bad for her...and felt like I didn't know whether it was better to shut up or encourage or what...........Has anybody else been in this situation? Oh I have heard that one said over and over again. There's nothing worse than an ex-smoker. It's just that you want them to see the light, the way we see it. Maybe some of them will, when they're ready. Great post Windy!!!! Windy You are right to try but not to preach. I have been there! All I get is 'There is nothing worse than an ex-smoker!' Quitting is an individual thing. we all know the risks associated with smoking and the harm it does to those around us. Tell them about the site and let them make their own minds up! I completely understand that empathy for smokers once we quit. It's like we see the light and taste the freedom and we want to share that with all of the smokers out there! I have tried to "save the world" from smoking too... but it usually doesn't work well. At least you weren't preachy or snooty about it. That's what matters. I hope you had an influence on her and that she will quit too. Crave the Quit! Windy be proud of your achievement, quitting smoking is not for wimps LOL....It's a hard job and you're doing it. I, like Lady, talk to everyone about it.... gets me in a bit of trouble, but so what, if I help one person quit, it'll be worth it. Congrats on passing that test. :)Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 135 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,039 Amount Saved: $540 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 22 Mins: 22 Seconds: 14

I'm with Free. I tell people about my quit and encourage them if they are pondering it...but quitting is personal and you must have the desire first. As a smoker I used to avoid the "holier than thou, I quit, reformed smokers" probably because they made me feel guilty. All the preaching in the world didn't make a difference, in fact I smoked more. Want, desire and determination HAS to present. When a smoker brings up the issue of quitting with me, I get excited and let them know that quitting is within their grasp and that if they want any support I'll be there for them. Then I push no farther ... the ball is in their court. Fondly, Free It hurts to see people killing themselves, no matter the method.
