the line is supposed to read 'I quit, using the gum for the forst 10 days!' it isn't reading right above! oops My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/15/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 64 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,297 Amount Saved: $288 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 14 Mins: 47 Seconds: 55

I am not quite 100 days but, I just have to be a part of everything...it's a personality flaw! I quit using the gum for the first 10 days, then went cold turkey! I fully intended to go 12 weeks on gum but after the first 10 days I had this huge feeling of empowerment and said 'screw that, I want to be free' hehehe! Well, that was it. I believe whatever it takes is perfect! Just as long as we don't smoke, life is grand! :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/15/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 64 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,297 Amount Saved: $288 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 14 Mins: 47 Seconds: 50

Hey Everyone - I will stop and drop my 2 cents in ~ I used neither cold turkey or NRT - I am a laser therapy quitter (so is my other half). I always do things different and thought this sounded like an interesting way to quit ~ As with any quit - you have to Want that quit more than anything, no matter how you choose to do it. Well Ed, I used the patch (weaning down as directed)for 7 weeks. I think it prolonged the agony of the ultimate need to go cold turkey as we all must do eventually...however- and this is a big point...I very much doubt I would have made it through the first week (or the first day, for that matter)without using the patch so the prolonging of the agony becomes a moot point for me. Other than some people used nrts and some didn't, I'm not sure this information will tell us anything than just that (some did, some didn't), but go for it! It will be interesting to see, just the same. I'd hesitate to draw any conclusions other than "some did and some didn't", and I mean that in a completely objective statistical sense. Way too many variables here! :gasp: My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 152 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,102 Amount Saved: $1368 Life Gained: Days: 25 Hrs: 1 Mins: 33 Seconds: 35

Sorry Mr Ed - Answered question 1 and forgot question 2. Why did I choose coldturkey. Because I was scared of the effects of NRT last time and so I just thought I would. Someone at work quit CT, she is my age and had smoked for as long as me (40 years).I thought "If she can, I can too". Not a very thoughtful reason to choose CT, I know, but its the only one I have. Tried patches 10 years ago - lasted 7 weeks. Now 154 days cold turkey from day one. On the plus side, no slips, no palpitations and no blimey o'reilly dreams. Willpower and determination just suck sometimes - but they do work(in between all the sobbin', screamin', eatin' and fartin'). Gettin there is slow, windy and dramatic - I ain't going back now!! Pat.

Hi Mr Ed, a) Cold Turkey b) I had tried patches and gums in the past, but it didn't feel right for me(and it didn't help me). I wanted my body to get rid of the nicotine ASAP and the only way for me was Cold Turkey. Hello the discussion about state subsidized NRT's and counselling is a whole kettle of fish. I go to a live (in person) quitting group and it is paid for by the government health care. The hospital subsidises patches, gum and inhaler. The hospital treats the NRT program in their own way, I am not a DR or Pharmacist so I won't dwell on it and it is radical in comparison to the plan on the box. I was an anomoly because I came in asking for a support group at about 110 days, I felt very fragile and that my quit was in jeopardy. The VCC which is the operator of the Stop Smoking Centre has a lot of statistics about how, who, where and how long a quit can be ... find more information at the bottom of the screen. It is really amazing and incredialble information. I wonder if any information studies exist that show how effective i.e., how long NRT's and cold turkey ot other methods last. All good information to know.
