why does this happen

Hi Everyone: Well it is my second day on the upped dosage of paxil (20Mg) and the ativan as needed, today I took only 1 ativan and feel pretty good. I noticed that the paxil has made me extremly tired and I have slept most of the day. I remember when I first went on paxil I had the same reacation, but hopefully it goes away. Lily

hi again lavic... I forgot to say that maby you should talk to your doctor about the side effects you had last time with the higher dose of paxil. I know that for me when I am really bad anxious I feel dizzy and sick to my stomach with or without drugs... maby your response was a part of your panic and just coincidental that you took more paxil on those days? Other wise your doctor might have other medications that might work like paxil but dont effect you the same way? Ok... I really am done now :)

Hi Lavic. My experience with 20 mg of Paxil has been really great. I think that Paxil's side effects are well worth the freedom and state of mind it provides me. The main side effects I have from it are muscle spasms and general muscle rigidity. At times my muscles all feel sorta excited which can be a little bit weird, but its ok... nothing bad ever happens. At first I felt a little drugged, but its only been like 2 weeks on the higher dose ...maby only one week.. either way I dont feel drugged any more. I feel normal. I am functioning alot better... I can eat again, I dont have a permanent butterfly in my stomach anymore, I am getting more bold about leaving the house... ... I am getting back to my old self. I still have attacks... last night I came close to full blast in fact, but for those times I have my other tools like xanax. When I have an attack I just take a .5 mg xanax and try to think about anything else until that kicks in. I guess I am not offering that much encouragement, but I really think that if your doctor thinks its a good idea to try 20 mg of paxil then you should go ahead and try. Give it a week or so, it cant be any worse than having a panic attack at work or school right? You can always go back down to 10 mg if you dont like it. Keep in mind too that this is only temporary... I remember what it was like before this panic all started, and I know it will be like that again. Paxil is going to help me get there, and once I'm there I am planning to not need paxil... at leasting hoping i dont. But even if i do need it, at least I will be able to function again. Now, my doctor has me taking my whole 20 mg in the morning ~ I dont know if that makes a difference or not in how it effects you... and also I wanted to say that I notice I ALWAYS have an attack lately if I take any caffine or eat sugary foods. I dont know if that helps you at all, but I thought I would throw it out. I'll be thinking about you today, I hope everything goes ok at work. Good luck with whatever you decide lavic. wannabeMe

Dear Wannabeme and LilyC I'am going through exactly want you described in your last messages. I'am taking 10mg Paxil around supper time but every morning , I take Xanax. This morning, I had a mini panic attack at my daughter's daycare. I just had to leave and be outside. I always feel the need for some air. I feel like I'll faint if I don't leave the immediate area immediatly. Anyway, I think I'am still a little too anxious to continue with just 10 mg a day. I'am doing CBT therapy but I think it will take time before kicking in. I tried for about 3 days 20 mg around 3 weeks ago and the side effects were terrible. I felt sick to my stomach and I was dizzy and shaky. What are you feeling with 20mg ? I went back to work Monday. I had been off for 3 months and the first days are always the hardest ! Every body is asking questions and I really don't feel like explaining how I felt and feel to all my co-workers. Any words of encouragement about 20mg of Paxil ? Lavic :quest:

Thank you for your words of encouragement. I started the 20mg of paxil last night, had to take a adavan when I woke up and one this afternoon, I am sure once the higher dosage of paxil kicks in it will help, right now I am just hoping it does real soon, I hate having to depend on the adavan to get through the day, I am hoping that the paxil will do the job. Hi all :) I thought I would share my experience, which is that I started on 10 mg of paxil with xanax as needed...at that dose I wound up needing xanax alot, so my doctor upped my paxil to 20 mg. I admit, I was hesitant to move up the dosage, I still am because I really hate the side effects of paxil ~ on the other hand, since I started that dosage like a week ago (the dosage of 20 mg) I have had the best days. Yesterday I didnt take any xanax at all. I guess the point of my story is that 20 mg helped me alot more than 10.

Hi ! LilyC You probably know more than me about this but I started taking Paxil 10mg a day a little over a month ago and my doctor wanted me to go up to 20mg after 5 days and I didn't because I felt better just with 10mg. When I saw her the next time, she explained to me that usally for anxiety related problems, the experts recommend 20mg per day. She says that's the usual dose for anxiety. I'am not telling you to take 20mg . I'am just suggesting that you talk it over with your doctor. Maybe 10mg not enough for you anymore. It's just a thought ! I still feel a bit anxious and I believe that 15mg would be best for me but it's hard to cut the pill in four equal amounts. (the pill comes in 20mg) Lavic :quest:

Dear LilyC, Sounds like you analyzing has bore some fruit of understanding. And, I feel certain you will find much relief from the anixiey/panic from the Ativan. That is the only medication I take and the only one, over the years, I have found that really 'slays the dragon'. I wish you luck in handling your situation at work. You just have to do what is right for 'you' ... remember, it is not the only job in the world. There are alternatives for you - however, only you can figure out what they are, if need be. Maria

Hi Anne-Marie: I was thinking about what could have triggered this all again, well were do I begin, I am not trying to grasp at straws here but here goes. About 3 weeks ago I got sick with bronchitis, when I went to the doctor they gave me a breathing treatment and also a shot of Prednezone (sp), I was told to stay home for 3 days which I did then went back to work, still feeling bad but not bad enough to stay home. The next week was fine, I had mild panic but nothing that I didn't ignore and chalk up to being sick and working hard. Then last tuesday on my day off they came on very strong and without warning, I continplated all day as to why this was happening, the conclusion I came up with was the fact that I had to let an employee go the day after thanksgiving and felt bad about it, and also my department had an audit and we failed in 4 sections, which made me feel like a failure, I found out about this audit on Tues (my day off), the next day I woke up in a sheer panic and called in sick. Was it because I had failed, was it becuase I hurt someone by letting her go. I have 11 other employees under me who always say "how do you do this" "how do you keep it together", did I finally let it all get to me? Do I strive for perfection and slip when I didn't achieve it? Do I need to take an "oh well approch" and don't let it get to me? I want more than anything to return to work and put my whole heart right back into my job. Why don't I want to drive myself the 20 miles there and back...the thought scares me, I have been doing it for over a year with no problem and actually look forward to it. But right now I can't even think about it. Sorry for rambling on, but I am just wanting to get right back on the horse. I did go to the doc today and he uped my paxil to 20mg and put me on Adavan a low dose to help knock the edge off, and told me to return to work on Friday...I hope and pray I can do it,I am only trying to think good thoughts and telling any negetive thoughts to please leave NOW

Hi, Lily, I replied to you in the Introduction forum. Examine whether in all this extra work week you increased you coffee intaqke, etc, which may have affected this. Don't hesitate to use our site resource tools. If you have done CBT before, look through session 12 to help you move forward again. You can download the booklet. -- Anne-Marie, Site Administrator
