A friend of mine has observed that my voice has become less raspy, and I think she's right ! :)
Perhaps I should search for more info on voice improvement after quitting cigarettes! :)
Cheers,
nmc

Hi,
While searching more info on the Internet, I came across an article about Polly Bergen who quit smoking after 50 yrs, and her singing voice was restored! Amazing!

My mother had that "raspy" voice. She'd smoked from the time she was 17 until she was 74 yrs. old. She quit when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. The raspiness never went away. She died when she was 78. Cancer is not a nice thing to witness, my sister and I watched Mom fade away. For what I have witnessed, I never want to smoke again. Jan

This might sound really gross but smoking is not pretty!!! My hubby and I were out boating this summer with some friends and I coughed (smokers hack) and something awful came flying out of my mouth (lung biscuit)!!!!! Most smoker's you all know what it was!!! And my GF freaked and screamed "what the hell is that"!!!!
When I think I need a smoke that awful gross thing I coughed up comes to mind!!!!! :8o:

Was reading this interesting thread, here, and was particularly interested to know how long our voices take to heal after smoking. I have been quit for what seems like an age(!! 2 months nearly!!) but my singing voice is still a bit weak. I understand that it will take some time for the mucus to settle (hmmm - attractive!) and for the voice to be clear again.
But then - nmc just answered my question. I will sit tight and wait for the singing voice to boom!!!

No more cig,
It's quite possible. Your throat endured years of hot smoke and has now had a chance to heal itself.
Yet another benefit brought to you by your quit. Isn't it wonderful?
Thanks for sharing.

Ok, so I was at work last night (waitress at a posh spot in sf)when I was helping these two women. the older of the two women had the most harsh and raspy voice that I have EVER heard -- and yes I have heard many speak who are long term smokers. It just sounded sooooo unattractive and I really did feel sorry for her because I am sure that she was very aware of it. Hearing this woman was just what I needed as I had been thinking of smoking all day (wasn't going to, just thinking of it). well, needless to say the thought of a cig didn't enter my mind the rest of the night!!! I am just so happy that I never developed this voice problem but I was curious if anyone knows if this clears and your voice returns to normal with time??? WHAT ARE SOME REASONS/EXAMPLES THAT OTHERS HAVE SEEN IN DAILY LIFE THAT MAKE THEM STAY QUIT??

Dear Kat
I am a female that smoked for 34 years.
When I was in my 20's I was told ALL the time what a "sexy" voice I had.
I have done tech support (on the phones all the time) for the last several years. About a year ago, my clients started saying "yes sir". I was actually too embarressed to say hey I am a lady!
I have been quit for 7 months and I have not gotten the "sir" for about 3-4 months.
And twice I have had guy clients say...man you have a sexy voice! LOL
I AM BACK!!
SOME smoking damage can be REVERSED!
WOOOOHOOOO!
To you new quitter females......besides the wrinkles and grey skin.........MAN VOICE is another reason to STAY QUIT!

Hi Kat,
I know exactly what you mean by the "raspy" voice. Someone in my family that's smoked heavily for years is often mistaken for a man by phone. She's "grown" with it so I don't think she even notices how badly she sounds anymore. She just laughs it off. It's sad, the things we were willing to sacrifice for the sake of nicotine.
I've read that the voice can improve after you quit smoking while some will experience permanant damage. Whatta gamble... just ask those who developed throat cancer due to their smoking.
Congrats on your 26 days! Aren't you glad you don't have that black cloud hanging over you now?? :)
