Leaving Las Vegas

Smoking is no longer en vogue and Las Vegas is one of the few places where smoking is still acceptable. The casinos allow it and even provide glass ashtrays on the ledge of most every row of slot machines. I've been to Vegas many times over the years. (mostly for conventions) This recent trip was a vacation and I noticed something different this year. The majority of the casinos did not smell like smoke. One smelled like green apples, another like fabric softener. I don't gamble but we had to walk through the casinos to get to other attractions so I appreciated not smelling smoke. I also noticed something I've never seen before. (except in Asia) People sitting at the slot machines wearing white surgical masks! My first thought was, "does someone in here have SARS?"~lol Only to realize they were protecting themselves from the smoke. It was a strange sight. I thought perhaps seeing a lot of people smoking might bother me. It did not. I was struck by how unhappy most of them looked. Squinting and blowing out hard because the act of smoking was something they 'had' to do more than they 'wanted' to do it. I could relate to that old feeling of being chained to the sickarette. I'm relieved to be free of THAT SELF-IMPRISONMENT. If you are having a tough go of it right now, please hang on. -Work on developing the attitude that you are doing yourself a favor by not smoking. Do not dwell on the idea that you are depriving yourself of a cigarette. You are ridding yourself of full-fledged smoking because you care enough about yourself to want to. -Be aware that many routine situations will trigger the urge for a cigarette. Situations which will trigger a response include: drinking coffee, alcohol, sitting in a bar, social events with smoking friends, the end of meals. If any event seems too tough, leave it and go back to it later. Do not feel you must give up any activity forever. Everything you did as a smoker, you will learn to do at least as well, and maybe better, as an ex-smoker. -Don't debate with yourself how much you want a cigarette. Ask yourself..."How do you feel about going back to your old level of consumption?" Smoking is an all or nothing proposition. If you will follow NOPE (not

Ericon, I'll be honest with you. I'm not sure the casino is where you need to be this soon. Spend your time with non-smoking family and go to THE ARCADE ;) It's just as fun! You really do need to avoid the second hand smoke this early in your quit if you can. Everytime I ever went to the casino I smoked. I smoked when I played, I smoked when I won, I smoked when I lost, I just smoked anytime. The only time I didn't smoke was in my hotel room as hubby and I always get a non-smoking room which helped. It's very hard when everyone around you is puffing away, it's ooh so tempting to light up. After reading Hummy's post something just came to me.... You know how as smokers we were always sneaking away from whatever was going on.. the party, the movie, the whatever... We were the minority because a lot of people didn't smoke. We are not those people anymore! We are NON-SMOKERS! How cool is that! I just Love it! N2K! Good to see you. Sounds as if even Las Vegas might be figuring it out. Paris was so much less smoky than I thought it would be. There were still many restaurants that had ash trays on the table, but I noticed that very few people were using them. We met people from Australia, Texas, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic and NONE of them smoked. Not cravin', never cavin'.
