question about addiction

for 18 år siden 0 66 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I have no idea what the answer is valic but I can assure you that once the so called social smoker starts he or she will become a full-time addict, like the rest of us. Maybe the person who calls themselves a social smoker is already addicted and is hiding the fact that he or she smokes more than you know of. I know of no one, that can only smoke during a certain time frame. had enough My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/20/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 10 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 379 Amount Saved: $75 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 1 Mins: 23 Seconds: 48

Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs. I have seen the addiction rates for nicotine, cocaine, and heroine, and nicotine addicts a higher percentage of people faster. So the answer to your question is that not everyone does get addicted to nicotine, although the overwhelming majority of people who try it do. Of course, I can see no reason why social smoking is good for anyone, but the same can be said for social drinking. Why bother? Does everyone get addicted to nicotine? I was just wondering I know that I am an addict but some people in my family are not addicted at all but they smoke once in a while. My sister only smokes one weekend a yr! Not Me I can never have another one again for fear that I would start back up again! But is there such a thing as a "social smoker"? One of my best friends only smokes on friday nights with work buddies. All through the week she won't have 1 but Friday's after work. I was just wondering if this was common. Thanks so much for the info! I know several people like that too Valic. When they started the No Smoking at work,we could not smoke on the property. These people were the worse ones about it...fussing that is?? I would think to myself....geesh wish i only smoked once a month, this would be a breeze" They would ask me what i was gonna do, i told them.....leave and smoke. They were not about to do that. But to this addict it was worth it to give up eating to smoke. Ya know i got use to leaving property,it was nice to get away. Now i stick around, seldom take my breaks and such. Gotta stay busy. Hi Valic, In answer to your question, I've met about 6 people in my life who can just have a cig every month or so. I've also met 100s of addicts like myself hope this helps Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 158 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,758 Amount Saved: 1185 Life Gained: Days: 26 Hrs: 10 Mins: 38 Seconds: 52

My opionion, for which I have reasearched absolutely nothing, is that some people can smoke, drink, drug, whatever, once in a blue moon and not feel compeled to do it again. I am one of those people with alcohol. I can take it or leave it. I have a drink when my back muscles are tight sometimes. The only time that I have more than one drink is at parties, and even then I don't think I ever have more than 2 or 3, I drink very slow. The last thing I ever want in the morning is the hair of the dog so to speak. But if I have one cigarette, I stop at 7-11 on the way home and smoke a pack the next day. I am absolutly addicted. I think if you getting addicted to a substance is based on lots of things: genetics, age at first exposure, brain chemistry, and how often the body is exposed during a set period of time. I think these are probably at the top of the list. I also seem to get addicted to chocolate ;-)... no lie! Valic... there is no way I could ever be a social smoker but I'm not sure if everyone gets addicted or not. Interesting question. Hi, Valic. Some people have a genetic difference that causes them to metabolize nicotine much slower than most people. As a result, their blood nicotine levels stay higher for longer and drop much more slowly. The result is they can go longer between cigs and don't crave when they don't get them. The effect could be compared to having a built-in NRT system. That's not to say that they are not addicted, though. Nicotine is listed as a drug of addiction and is considered to be stronger than heroin and cocaine in its addictive properties. They are still addicted, they just don't show it as obviously. Valic, I can have a drink now and then, once a week, once a month. My ex-husband was an alcoholic...one drink led to drinking the whole bottle and then going out for more. So I guess I am a "social drinker." But I am not a social smoker. There's no point in even comparing the two. I am what I am... Valic, Everyone views there addiction differently. No-one is doing their body any good by being a social smoker! You are on the right path and you have made a wonderful choice. Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
