I feel so guilty....

Hey Krissie; Maybe she's just reacting to your being 'different' lately ?? You've got to admit, going the cold turkey route does have it's emotional momemts for us and that might be confusing, or a bit scary to a little one. I think kids are well attuned to what's going on around them, much more so that we give credit to. Just a guess but have a feeling that once you are feeling better, calmer, she will too. Please don't buy into the guilt trip - - that's junkie thinking. Leads to beating yourself up so much, that what's the use . . . might as well pick one up . . . NO - - NO SMOKING! Lady hit it right on the head, the past is past. Let's look to a bright, healthy future! Hugs to you & Emma, Ericon My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/30/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 4 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 141 Amount Saved: $29 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 10 Mins: 57 Seconds: 4

Hey guys, I had a really horrendous realisation tonight that has left me feeling really really guilty.... I wonder if any of you have experienced this too? I have a 6 year old daughter called Emma and before I quit we would never smoke in the house while she was awake and about.. We always smoked in the garden and in the evening once she had gone to bed we would light up in the lounge... She has just gone to spend a week with her dad and I was talking to my partner about her behaviour over the past week and It hit me.... THE POOR CHILD IS GOING THROUGH WITHDRAWALS TOO!!!! She has been crying for no reason, throwing really horrendous tantrums, had mood swings constantly and been a right little madamme all since I quit smoking last Friday... The only thing I can put this down to is that I now make my Partner Brett smoke outside all of the time and there is now no nicotine travelling up the stairs (or through the ceiling and floors) to get to her in her room.... Is this possible??? If I had known that smoking was going to affect my daughter as badly as this I would have quit a long long time ago.... This has just strengthened my resolve to keep this quit for the rest of my life.... I NEVER EVER want to put my precious little angel through any of this ever again!! I wonder if she will ever forgive me for what I have done to her???? After a month we are having a Mother Daughter day together... That will be just what we both need I guess... Krissie I have been quit for 6 Days and 3 seconds (6 days). I have saved 26.57 by not smoking 120 cigarettes. I have saved 10 hours of my life. My Quit Date: 28/07/2006 00:01

I'm sorry, Krissy *hugs hugs hugs* I know exactly what you are going through.. My kids have been going through it too. My oldest boy picked up a smoking friend, and I had to cut that off... more because he was a moron, than a smoker, but both factered in.. (Go read my latest journal entry) I'm sure the need for the second hand smoke helped that friendship along. My oldest daughter had to stay home from school the other day because she couldn't sleep at all that night and she had leg pains and hand pains and all the stuff i was going through.. also the uncontrollable crying. The baby has been the most heartbraking of all. He's experienced almost all of the withdrawals that I did. Then i had 2 other children that seemed completey unafected. Here's what I did.. i started rewarding all of us, and making this all a big celebration.. they don't know they are going through withdrawals, and I havn't told them. I feel so guilty too. I give them pain medicine as neaded, and we have just been hanging out and doing fun stuff, and eating comfort foods, and buying our time right now. Brian wrote my Krissy (oldest daughter) a really funny note for missing school, and we went out to breakfast that day she stayed home.. we've also written all of them notes for not doing their homework if nobody felt up to doing it. There's plenty of time to take life, homework, and school more seriously.. for now we need to take care of ourselves. I think everyone will be well on their way to a mend in a couple more weeks and things can go back to normal a little bit. On the possitive side.. the kids are a lot calmer already. Being that they all have ADD.. this is really been something great for my home. Don't be too hard on yourself. What is done is done. What is important is what you do from this day forward. You are smoke free today. Hug her. Know that you will never expose her to the dangers of second hand smoke again. Please do not let guilt eat you up. It will not do you or her any good. (((hugs to you both))) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/12/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 82 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,484 Amount Saved: $328 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 23 Mins: 13 Seconds: 31

Amethyst_isis, Although I have not seen any research on there being nicotine in second hand smoke, it's still filled with over 400+ chemicals, 50 of which cause cancer. Be proud you quit! Let this strengthen your resolve! Danielle __________________________ The SSC Support Team

Let go of the guilt. Yesterday is gone and today is a new day. You don't smoke now and that is what is important. This is a horrible addiction that has dictated our lives for far too long. It's time to take your life back. One thing I learned along this journey is that I canno change the past but the future is waiting for me. Quitting smoking opens up a whole new world to us that we didn't even know existed. I have been living in this world for over a year now and it is one awesome place. You are doing great! Keep going. Hi amethyst, Your post made me do some thinking on the subject of children and the possibility of withdrawals from second hand smoke. I did some researching and other than the usual facts you see of how second hand smoke can cause low birth weight, SIDS, behavior problems, asthma, inner ear troubles, etc...I wasn't really able to find much on actual withdrawals. I did read that children, until about the age of 5, have much higher respiratory rates than adults...and young lungs recieve a higher concentration of chemicals when exposed to second hand smoke than older lungs. A child subjected to a heavily smoked filled room can inhale a tremendous amount of toxins...the equivalent of 10 cigarettes... in as little as an hour. Even if your Emma was intaking some nicotine from second hand smoke, we know that the body has the ability to clear it from our systems in about 3 days. I would think since children's metabolisms are higher and they have the increased respiratory rate, that they could clear it even faster. If her behavior is different beyond that amount of time, I'd say that nicotine withdrawal probably isn't the culprit. Thankfully, she doesn't have the mental aspect or the stress of quitting to deal with as you do... but... that may very well be what she's sensing... all the emotional changes or stress that you're experiencing as you quit and that could affect her behavior. Otherwise, I'm betting she's just being your typical 6 year old :) Little ones are soooo resilient.. she'll definitely benefit from not being exposed to smoke, as will you. Your being a wonderful example by quitting. By the time she's older, she may not even recall that you ever smoked... and that to me, would be pretty awesome. You're being a great mom....and doing a great job. Keep it up. Congratulations on completing hell week :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/2/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 547 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 10,951 Amount Saved: $1952.79 Life Gained: Days: 57 Hrs: 23 Mins: 26 Seconds: 21
