Please note: If any of you read the posts above Trish's that were removed, consider that it's contents were libelous. Given the circumstances that the poster elsewhere wonders if his/her fears were realistic or unrealistic, we therefore feel it would serve no purpose to leave it up and alarm the group.

I take it you were alone when you went in for surgery. In your circumstance, I would find somebody, I trusted and knew about my disorder very well, sign a temporary Power of Attorney, over decisions, in medical procedures, admittance to any other facilites, etc.Take this person with you. You wouldnt be admitted to any mental hospital against your will, unless, they TRULY thought you would be a harm to yourself or to others. Trish

Anne, good questions :) I think my fear was justified in that I had such horrible experiences as a child, especially with extractions. My fear was that I would experience the same unbearable pain. I think I took sufficient measures ahead to enure as little pain as possible. If I had to under go oral surgery again I don't think I would have the fear as now I know what to expect. I am going to dentist next week and I know I will need to have work done. I think I will be ok :)

Ellie, that's wonderful! So now, tell us if your fear was justified and how you would handle it the next time?

Just a quick update. My oral surgery went off without a hitch and I must say it was a very positive experience :) I took a 1/2 of xanax the morning they did it to take the edge off. The prepped me and put in my IV and next thing I knew I was on my home with no pain. I was given some pain killers, took two when I got home in anticipation of pain, not because it hurt :) By the next day I was off pain meds and by Sunday I was eating regular food with no problems. All in all there was very little pain and discomfort. Funny that the tooth has been a problem for a very long time and I put up with all that pain and discomfort fearing treatment and the treatment was a breeze compared to all the pain it caused. I still don't care much for the dentist and go for my regular exam and cleaning in a few weeks. I think I will be able to handle it ok :)

Anne - Sorry it has taken me so long to thank you :) They ended up cancelling my appointment after all of that and rescheduled it this past Tuesday. I did better on Tuesday, no attacks or meds. It went well and the surgeon said right off he would put me to sleep and I will get pain meds as well. I feel better about it but am still very nervous. I go tomorrow morning. I did take a xanax today to take the edge off, by 10am I was turning into a basket case :) The doctor said I could take xanax the night before and in the morning as well if I needed it. Thank you for all of your support :)

Hi Ellie. It's one of those situations where worry won't change a thing except maybe preparedness. It seems that you've covered the post-extraction pain aspect. Are there other issues that need coevering? If so, suggest writing down your questions so you don't forget to have them answered when you get there. Other than that, I know the more relaxed you can make yourself, the less anguish and pain you will have. How about treating yourself to a relaxing warm bubblebath before you go?

I know it is silly but I have an appointment with an Oral Surgeon this afternoon and I am terrified. I know that they are not going to do anything today, but have to go because I have to have a tooth pulled and it is complicated. I have given myself a mild attack. I took a xanax a few minutes ago and am waiting for it kick in. This is the first time I have had to take in two weeks. I just have this horrible fear that makes my stomach hurt. I made it through the dental appointment on Wednesday without meds but I think I was really thinking it would turn out to be a sinus problem, not my tooth. I know why I am afraid, I am scared to death of the pain. Had some really bad experiences as a kid, had almost all my baby teeth pulled and oral surgery at 16 which was horrific and painful. They say that they are very good at keeping pain to a minimum and seem to take pain management seriously but I am still very afraid. I can feel the xanax starting to work a little :) Any advice for a this big chicken? Ellie
