I have a dream...

Your question intrigued me, cuz my hubby says he will dream of drinking sometimes, and wake up in a cold sweat at the thought of breaking his 6 years sobriety, so I did a little surfing on the web. I found mostly rambling, but a couple of interesting answers. I didn't save the sites, just copied the relevent bits from a google search "smoking + recurring dreams": 1
In my limited opinion it seems to me that when you have this dream perhaps you are in a social situation where people are smoking. Your subconcious helps you out at night when you are asleep letting you smoke on a dream level because on another level you would really like to light up again. Dreams let us realise the things we can't or wouldn't do in waking life.
2
Almost everyone has experienced one or more dreams that contain anxiety or outright fear. These experiences can be quite traumatic or become recurrent. For some, unpleasant dreams or nightmares repeat in actual content. For others, the content may change while the theme remains the same, such as scenes of falling, or of being pursued or attacked, of being late or unprepared for class, a presentation or an exam. Some people even dream of being stuck in slow motion and unable to move, or of being naked in public, to name a few common themes. Research has shown that most recurring dreams are described as being unpleasant. Furthermore, many dream theories converge in their view that this type of experience is associated with lack of progress by the dreamer to recognize and solve related conflicts in life.
So it looks like ambivalence in our waking hours can cause this type of dream? Maybe. I just thought it was interesting. And looking it up gave me an hour without thinking of smoking, so if it's helpful to you too, that's a bonus. Some place or other, it said you can "direct" your dreams, if you write some question or other down you will dream about it within a week. I don't know about that, but I do know that your relief when you wake up says you really don't want to smoke, and that's maybe the message. Reinforcement of the drive to stay smoke free, no matter the thoughts during waking hours. I'll drink to that! ;) Keep up the great work! 7 months is AWESOME! My Milage:

How about a drink before bed :). Say I had a few of those dreams and they were so real. Is it every night or just some?

Every night your dream reinforces your resolve to stay quit. So, start to see the dream as a blessing. Eventually the dream will give up ... LOL! ;p Fondly, Free btw ... Thanks so much for all of your input and encouragement! It was very helpful, I have read and re-read all of your comments. Meanwhile, last night I was smoking on a train in Germany. That's very strange. But I seem to be travling to interesting places anyway, so that's on the plus side. If I beat this dream thing I'll let you know what worked best. I've made it for 7 months now without even one slip... but I continue to have the same dream every night! I only wish it was some sort of really exciting/entertaining dream, but it's not. The locations are always different, sometimes I'm on the beach, other times in a car, once I was in an elevator(!) another time I was in Paris...but the dream is always the same. I light up a cigarette and smoke it! Then I get so angry at myself as I gag and choke and ask myself why I started back! It tastes awful (but I know the 2nd one might be better)! I tell myself, "You are so stupid! It will take you forever to quit smoking again." I'm so disappointed in myself that I started back! Then I wake up and realize it was just a dream. It's become like ground hog day, only it happens every night. Am I going insane?? How do I get out of this loop? Anybody else suffer from that malady? Any suggestions?? Thanks!~ Rauch My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/23/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 215 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,469 Amount Saved: $1075 Life Gained: Days: 43 Hrs: 3 Mins: 3 Seconds: 43

Rauch, Just curious - did you give yourself rewards along the way? Not sure what is going on with the dream but it's almost like you can't believe you really quit! Rauch, Congrats on 7 months, what an achievement! Have you tried relaxation techniques? Take the time to make a plan for each night. Use breathing techniques, stretching, hot bath and a good book. Ease into your sleep and see if this helps :) Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
