After the Smoke Clears

Thanks everyone. I am feeling much better. Sometimes we just need to step back from all the challenges that life sends our way and put everything back into perspective. Once we step back and regroup we can move forward stronger than before and ready to face what comes our way. The power of positive thinking amazes me. As always, thank you so much for the support. It is nice to know you are there when I need you. :) Susie and Smoggs... so good to see both of you. It's been a long time. Thanks for the prayers Island Girl. Your life is changing for the better. Don't worry about the weight gain. You will lose it. I had a lull around the 200 day mark too. You can handle it. You are doing great and I know that deep inside you know this quit is still so very important. You probably just need a little time for fun. How about I come that way 10/21???? I'll bring the boys and we'll go to that par 3 course. What do you say? Cheryl, Having you for a friend has been extremely special for me as well. The friends I have made here have touched my life in ways that no others ever have. I didn't realize there were so many good people out there. I've said before, and I'll say it again. I know that this is where God sent me over a year ago and that it was His will for me to quit. I know this because he sent good friends like you to help me through it. I have made special friends indeed. This past 14 months I have watched so many of my life long dreams come true. It is a good feeling. Some times I get overwhelmed but I know that I am where I am supose to be. I can honestly say I am happy for the first time in many, many years. It all began when I quit smoking and met you guys that have taught me to view the world in a whole new light. You, Duffis, Shevie, Hummy, Ladybugg, Luna, Rusty, Smogs, and Joe will always be so special to me. Thank you. Thank you Pam. I won't ever forget all those Friday and Saturday nights we spent together fighting for our quits. We laughed, we yelled and we cried. Your friendship kept me company and kept me quit on many occassions. I never really believed we would make it to here. Did you? Life really has changed since those early days. Thanks for all the times you have been there. Thank you everyone. Your words do help. Sometimes life is just kind of tough. I have quotes in my daily planner and today's seem appropriate.
I have always been delighted at the prosepct of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting omwhere behind the morning. J.B. Priestly
I wish I had never smoked and had developed into adulthood without the crutch. Like I've said before, I cannot change the past but the future is waiting for me. Hanging on. One step at a time is right. Thanks you. Depression Early in my quit, I had a very difficult time dealing with the depression of losing my best friend (the cigarette). I sought out professional help with counseling and even medical help from my family physician. My life was very busy and stressful so there were a lot of things to blame my depression on despite the fact that I had just quit smoking. Time progressed and life moved on. I have progressed leaps and bounds from where I was in those early days. I no longer desire to smoke however, the affects of the many years of smoking are clearly with me today. I have worked very hard at changing the way I view life and the thoughts that I entertain on a daily basis. However, there are times that despite my efforts, I find myself heading in a downward spiral of those early days of self-pity and depression. During the course of the last year my world has become a happy place and I have absolutely nothing to be depressed about. This leaves me with the feeling of what in the world is wrong with me? Prior to quitting smoking I really do not remember fighting depression. Maybe I was depressed. I certainly wasnt happy like I am now but I would have a cigarette and life went on. I proceeded in doing whatever came next. That doesnt work now and I dont know what does. What am I looking for here? I have no idea. I have posted mind boggling stuff here before and this quit family always seems to help me get back on track and to see the light. Maybe that is what Im looking for. I do know what I am not looking for. What I need is guidance and possibly to know that I am not the only one who feels this way. Thank you. I've had a lot going on this week. The fog is beginning to clear. Normally I would have smoked a couple of packs a day during a period like this but I didn't even consider it for one second. Now that is what I call progress. Rob I did receive your message and I thank you. Ladybugg... thanks. Lady - An old-time Smober here. Just came by to check-in and was saddened by your post. Wish I had the answer for you. You have always been so supportive of all that have come to SSC, especially in our hours of need. Feel like I'm letting an old friend down by not being able to "fix-it". I think that's an old Mom thing, the "fix-it" syndrome. Don't know if it could possibly be a factor but during my quit my hormones went wild. Still get wacky from time to time. Please do talk to your doctor. If the first one doesn't take you seriously find one that does. You are a kind and giving person and I'm sad to hear you so down. Maybe it's time for a Smober party. What ya think? Smogsliftin has made an appearance. Are there any other Smobers around? You can even pick the venue. ;p :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/7/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 463 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 9,274 Amount Saved: $1546.42 Life Gained: Days: 63 Hrs: 18 Mins: 54 Seconds: 23

Hey Lady, You have had a lot of advice and I know that you have read it all. So just to keep your mind busy, I decieded to add some of my own. Before you make the trip to that doctors office, you need to add up all the changes in your life over this last 14 months. I know that Hummy listed some of them for you, but you know there are others. Big life changes like quitting smoking, changing jobs, graduating, finding new special friends, having teenagers, living with parents, wrecking your car, dieting, even vacation can cause major stress in your life. And challenges like those having been an ongoing thing in your life. You have been through alot, and learned to cope with alot, and you have even been able to help support others during this time. Those are positive things. Maybe you need drugs and a shrink, or maybe you just need a friend. That's part of why we are here also.We can't always give the right stuff when we don't know all. Supporting you through your quit journey has been our pleasure. Being your friend has been a treat. Your doing fine, you just keep keeping on.... Hi Lady, Sorry - I just saw your post. Heres a thought. Do you remember when you first quit and how delighted you were that you DID IT? Do you remember rushing and working and planning while going to classes after working all day and then you GRADUATED? Do you remember applying for a new position, going on interviews and then you GOT IT? You have completed all the things you set out to do. Whoever first said the journey is the reward knew what they were saying. Maybe youre a bit down now because you need a new goal. Think of the thing youd most like to accomplish and strive towards it. It doesnt have to be something just for you. It could be working towards a goal at your church or in your office or maybe something for your children. I do, however, agree with Pen and Sillyme. If you continue to have bouts of depression, see the doc. Certainly wont hurt anything, and might help a lot. Darlin', here are the two most likely scenarios... 1. You have leftovers from quitting or from 'growing up' with a crutch. Or.... 2. You're smoking was masking clinical depression. So, here are your choices... 1. Give it more time, maybe it's just the normal ups and downs that non-smokers have. 2. Get talk therapy to help you through this adjustment in your life. 3. Get talk therapy (and possibly meds) to learn how to deal with this in your life. As a side note...you can be happy and still have clinical depression.
