Ever since I quit, the smell repulses me. It actually makes me feel like throwing up. It is nothing I can help. I don't know why. I've tried to force myself to be around it and it doesn't work, especially in enclosed places. I don't have anything against folks or friends that smoke. But I don't know how to get around the fact that the way they smell literally makes me physically ill. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Marie, I was thinking exactly this with my husband still smoking. I wished there was a solution that I could live with to get the smell out of my house (there is one but I would never start smoking again). Just here for support for you is all (and to vent I guess). Hiya Marie - Here is my opinion on this... I know when I smoked if someone came and started preaching to me about quitting it mostly just pissed me off. It did so for various reasons. Obviously one of them was jealousy and discomfort. I knew I would love to be a quit person but that I wasn't. The other was the hypocrisy of it. I feel comfortable saying that most smokers would like to quit but can't bring themselves to do it and felt just as I did when someone ELSE came to them and preached 'The Quit'. So where do you get off doing the same damn thing to me?! Heh. I hope that makes sense. I don't think it did. Anyways, because of that I don't preach it. I lead by example and I will mention it when it comes up. If I see one of my friends going to smoke I'll casually say something like 'Wow, do you realize it's almost been 6 months now for me!' or the old 'Heh. I'm STILL finding lighters around the house!' stuff. If the conversation goes from there (Things like 'Wow, 6 months already? That's so cool') I'll start doing things like mentioning this site, how I made it through the quit, etc etc. Things to really try to drive home that they can do it too. I will NOT bring it up out of the blue. I will NOT give the old 'Man you really should quit' speech. I won't be the sort of quitter that pissed me off when I was still smoking. Just one guys opinion! Marie - And so now you have more awareness.... There's never a reason to beat ourselves up - that serves no one... Take your clarity and love and move on, dear one... You never had an intention to hurt anyone's feelings... Hi Marie, I agree with PrincessC... I remember when I smoked, and I would get a look from someone or someone would complain w/in earshot and I would hear them... I felt very defensive AND embarassed about smoking... Remember when you smoked is my motto... I have two very good friends who smoke, and I choose to be around them and to deal with smoking as I love them dearly... When we remember how we felt in any given situation, it gives us a mirror of how to have compassion for others... IMO anyway. Others can usually feel our intention and our energy... If you are thinking it, they prolly are aware of it :) Blessings! *grin*@ Marie I know how you feel and I also know YOU KNOW you can't get your friends to quit even if you hassle them. Smokers don't like being preached to nor do they appreciate being judged. We were all smokers once, so we know being an understanding ex-smoker and setting a good example is a better way to influence a smoker to follow your lead right? ;) Now, before you go "yeah but, N2k!" ;p I do realize that being understanding IS very hard to practice when the smoke chokes you, the smell repulses you and it makes you feel proud to REALIZE the truth about "sickerettes". You understand addiction now so you want to help them! I understand completely! My two cents in this regard is to avoid the smoke (it is okay to set those kinds of personal boundaries. Just don't be rude) and channel any left over aggravation at the tobacco companies. Damn corporate money hungry life sucking death peddlers! See how that works? I feel better already! :eg: All the best~ 2 My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/20/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 423 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 9,306 Amount Saved: $2115 Life Gained: Days: 40 Hrs: 3 Mins: 35 Seconds: 17

opinion? Give it up. Feel (privately) sorry for them. Don't turn into a righteous ex-smoker. Pay attention to your own quit and to the quits of others here who are struggling. Sigh - wish it could be different, but don't think you would accomplish anything but the alienation of your friends. Marie, Wow - you have gotten some sage opinions! Don't feel bad, just let it heighten your compassion. It really is a sad addiction and the smokers know it. Right after I quit I told one of my closest friends that she was "stinky" after she just finished a cigarette. When I said it it wasn't to be mean it was just that I never knew how bad it smelled. The look of hurt in her eyes almost knocked me to my knees. Then I thought about how nobody complained about how bad I smelled in the 15 years that I smoked. It was two years after me but she finally quit on her own accord. When people wear bad perfume - and they do - we don't tell them how to make better choices in cologne. We just breathe through our mouths with smiles on our faces because we love them. ;p Great job on your 4+ Months!
