Yes, it is! I feel so much better about myself now when I'm not smoking, in a lot of different ways. Every new situations we are getting into as ex-smokers triggers us to want a cigarette. We need to have new ways to cope with that. I know it's very difficult for you right now, take long deep breaths and try to relax a little bit.

Yes, I think you did the right thing. Me and my husband have 1 (grown up)child each from previous marriages and I know how sensitive we both are if we say something negative about the others child. You did the right thing and I believe your wife will realize that after she comes down. As you wrote, what if something did happened to your step-daughter and you didn't tell her?

I know how difficult it is when we have problems and the emotions is running high! Keep going strong, and as everyone on this board would say; smoking doesn't help, the problem would still be there. I'm on IM if you want to talk.

Auctionman Do not confuse what is happening with your wife and family with what is happening in your quit. Do not mix the two together it will only endanger your quit and it will be like fanning flames on your family dispute. The quit is your quit and you will have whatever it is that you have from quitting a very tough addiction. Good for you for standing strong in the face of all of the stress and the fight that you are in. As Shevie says there is no better time. The stresses that you feel will be there at what ever time you decide to quit the will just be different and come from different places, they will be there non the less. Sorry I won't comment on the relationship stuff. However, make sure you are getting the same kind of support and care that you get in quitting for your relationship issues. There are men's groups and men's counsellors in Atlanta and perhaps you could find someone to speak with on your own, and then to help you with your relationship. Sounds like you could use some help with communication, stress and conflict management. There is help out there you need to want to shift just like with smoking. You need to want to create change just like with smoking and you need to be able to do this in a caring and loving way just like with smoking. Good for you for staying stong. It's worth it, auctionman. Hang in there. IMO, you did exactly the right thing. Stick to your guns, friend. You are not the bad guy here (I do wonder about the counselor, though). Auctionman, I think you feel like the bad guy because you've essentially been told you are. I'm no relationship counselor, I don't have any pieces of paper to hang on the wall to say I'm smart in that area, but IMO, there should not be boundaries between a man and his wife. To me, that violates a basic tenant of a marraige/relationship. It should not be you and yours against her and hers. You are a family, not roomies. OK, on to not smoking. It does appear you have picked a bad time to quit, but then any time is a bad time. Some are just worse than others. I've seen people here who have successfully quit even though their spouse/significant other left "because of the quit", so they said. Hang in there, auctionman. Smoking won't fix anything in your life. It may appear to provide some relief, but that's not real relief, just a sham, a lie. Stay smoke-free one minute at a time, if that's what it takes. Auctionman - What do you think? Do you think you did the right thing? That's all that really counts after all isn't it? Hang tough buddy.
