Hi Phoebe, yes I agree it can be hard to rationalize our thoughts when in the midst of a big attack. I don't get any major ones these days, but I did used to still try and rationalize my thoughts during the attack. And definately during small attacks. My main point of my previous email was that whilst people are calm and not doing anything they shouldn't look around for something to do with the mindset that "oh no I'm not doing anything, I need to do something so I won't get a panic attack". CYA

I'm don't agree that distracting yourself is running away from panic. What I am saying is that when in the midst of a panic attack, we have a tendency to obsess and listen in on what's going on inside of us, instead of applying some of the methods we're suppose to use to calm ourselves. When not in the middle of a panic attack it is much easier to rationalize our thoughts which for the most part are irrational. We have been told over and over again, that our symptoms are not dangerous, but it is so hard to convince ourselves of that when in the middle of an attack. We always think the worst. I guess each of us deals with panic in a different way. What works for some, may not work for another.

Howdy! I agree that sometimes it's important to give yourself a break and distract yourself, but I think it's important not to keep distracting yourself. I think it's good to learn to face and deal with what thoughts you are having. Talk them over with either yourself or someone else. Distraction won't solve the panic thoughts it will just postpone them. When I get a yucky thought I don't want to distract myself, instead I want to keep that thought in my head and work on it. I want to talk it over with myself and learn to convince myself that that thought is not ever going to happen and it's just an anxiety thought. When you deal with the thoughts they aren't going to come back - either at all or u can swipe them aside easier if they do. By distracting yourself u r really runnig away from the thought and that is saying that u fear the thought and we all know that when you fear the thoughts they come at u hard. Anyway that's just how I personally deal with panic attacks. See ya.

It would be so much easier if we were going crazy. Although panic is a scary thing, it cannot hurt us. I also have struggled with panic attacks on and off for about 20 years (since high school), and even though I know all the techniques on how to control them, sometimes it is hard. I understand how frustrating it can be. When you're alone, you wish someone was there, and when you're having an attack around others, all you want to do is be alone (fear of them seeing what's going on). When you're alone, the best thing is to find something to occupy your mind. It is so easy to dwell on and listen to what's going on in your body when you are alone.It's all you can think about. Try to find something you're interested in......read a book, watch a movie, listen to some music (even sing along)...anything to get your mind off the anxiety. You'll see, once you are concentrating on something else, the panic will subside. The important thing is to find something to distract yourself.

Hi all, my name is jeanie, i have suffered on and off with panic attacks since i was l4, but they went away for about 20 years, now they are back and it's like starting all over again. Very very frustrating..I want to know if anyone has had this overwhelming fear come over them when they are alone or even when they are sitting with someone, it's a feeling that literally starts in the stomach and then takes over your whole body, I want to run out of my own body...i know it's panic,but so overwhelming, it makes me want to cry like a little girl scared to death. Then the other symptoms kick in, trembling, slight heart palpitations, depression because i feel like i'm lost, never to be found, its' so overwhelming, am I going crazy or has anyone else felt this??? I'm alone right now at home and trying to fight this feeling, it's a rush right up my emotions.. I'm trembling inside too..please help. any support or feedback would be greatly appreciated. thanks Jeanie from New york
