I have never allowed anyone to make any decisions or choices for me. I have been a very independent and self reliant person from the age of 15. I grew up in a home with an extremely verbally and emotionally abusive father so I think that environment could have turned me into a young woman filled with fear yet stay in the home OR do what was best for me. My choice at age 19 was to move out. I forfeited a university/college education as a result. I had a full time job instead and I begged my mother and my sister to leave as well but they chose to live with him. When I think back now on how much guts it really took for me to just pack up with literally the shirt on my back, find my own apartment, leaving the most loving mother ever and a sister who was so lost left me feeling heavy hearted but I had to make a personal choice for ME. I grew up fast.. too fast. I never got to enjoy my younger years of university life, or dating lots of guys, going to bars every weekend with my friends. I worked very hard and I had bills to pay.. But! I had the peace and quiet and no more abuse. I have never regretted my choice. Actually this subject came up this evening with my mom and she said too it was the best decision I've ever made. Well for me, it was ONE of the best decisions/choices I've ever made. I have several more.. but, speaking in the here and now.. Stopping smoking is the best choice I've made! Second only to having a very shakey, emotional, stressful life with the best husband ever - Regardless of his health, both physical and emotional.. I choose to be right there by his side every moment of every day to ease his mind, to bring him any joy possible and that's the greatest choice of all! I've rambled.. and now.. goodnight... Monica58 p.s. I lost contact with my father for 15 years. One day on my 40th b'day we connected, had a wonderful 9 yrs together until he passed away from lung cancer. My choice was to forgive my dad for all the pain he caused. Again, another good decision and choice, on my part. I am very much in agreement of this thinking. It is very powerful. A much needed post. Something I don't understand though? The statement - "If you can let go of the notion that certain choices are utterly right while others are entirely wrong, you will be less tempted to invite others to take the reigns of your destiny." I believe quitting smoking is very much the utterly right choice. Why should I let go of that notion. Or am I not reading that correctly? A tough read Mr D but well worth the time and effort to read. As you know I have made some really dumb choices over the past but today I consider myself a huge success and am on the road to victory over this smoking thing. Continue to post while you still can, we all need your awareness and posts. Our lives are defined by the decisions we make each day. When we choose one option over another, whether we are selecting a restaurant or considering a cross-country move, we shape our lives. The decision-making process can be empowering, allowing us to enjoy the benefits of self-determination. Yet it can also be a source of anxiety because decisions force us to face the possibility of dissatisfaction and inner conflict. As a result, many of us opt to avoid making decisions by allowing others to make them for us. We consequently turn our power over to spouses, relatives, friends, and colleagues, granting them the stewardship of our lives that is ours by right. Though the decisions we must make are often difficult, we grow more self-sufficient and secure each time we trust ourselves enough to choose. Ultimately, only you can know how the options before you will impact your daily life and your long-term well-being. Within you lies the power to competently weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each selection. Even if you feel incapable of making a decision, your inner wisdom and your intuitive mind will give you sound counsel if you have faith in yourself. Try to come to your own conclusions before seeking the guidance of others, and even then, treat their suggestions as supplementary information rather than votes to be tallied. Before making your choice, release your fear of wrong decisions. Perceived mistakes can lead you down wonderful and unexpected paths that expose you to life-changing insights. If you can let go of the notion that certain choices are utterly right while others are entirely wrong, you will be less tempted to invite others to take the reigns of your destiny. When your choices are your own, you will be more likely to accept and be satisfied with the outcome of those choices. Your decisions will be a pure reflection of your desires, your creativity, your awareness, and your power. Since you understand that you must live with and take responsibility for your decisions, you will likely exercise great care when coming to conclusions. As you learn to make informed and autonomous choices, you will gain the freedom to consciously direct the flow of your life without interference. Peace and Love to you all. Duffis [B]My Milage:
