In the Habit

As I was leaving work yesterday I came down the elevator with a woman I know well enough to talk "socially" to b/c she has been smoking outside with me in the past. I chattered that I should have been taking the stairs down, explaining that I was trying to do that more. I said that I would do good for a while with it then I would get a cold, or have a load to carry one day or be late and I would be back at square one with trying to use the stairs. I observed that it is so easy to fall out of the habit. The use of the word "habit" snapped on me. I was struck with two thoughts, one of which made it out of my mouth. The first thought was - why is it hard to habituate some things, like exercise, while other things are easy, like smoking, etc. At the same time, why is it so easy to fall out of a habit, like exercising, and so hard for others, like smoking. The elevator opened to the lobby and we started our separate ways. Thinking more about myself and only realizing after I said it that she was on her way out for a smoke, I said "unless it's bad for you". So, here's to healthy habits. And, a roll of tape for my mouth. Imallclear, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Just as Katy said, nicotine is the ultimate threat as it combines both a physical dependence and mental habit. Danielle ________________________ The SSC Support Team

I guess we won't be talking a lot on our trip....we will both have rolls of tape in our mouth. Liking your attitude! well, the reason that smoking is so hard to turn from is cause it's much more than a habit....nicotine is one "highly" addictive substance....so while you may well have made your circumstances of smoking habitual....you created those habits to support the "addiction". Don't ever be fooled into thinking that nicotine use is merely a bad habit....it's a very insidious addiction...it's dirty, it's disgusting and most of all, it's deadly and keep using the stairs!! ;) Katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1849 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 73,982 Amount Saved: $10539.3 Life Gained: Days: 243 Hrs: 22 Mins: 6 Seconds: 58
