Thanks Penitent. Nice story N2K. I believe that positive thinking works for me because I depend on the Holy Spirit for power instead of depending on power solely from myself. I depend on a higher power to make the positive thinking stick and bring about permanent change. This way of thinking is as old as the Bible, as this is where it comes from. Modern day medicine would like to take credit for it. Just like science would like to take credit for discovering that the sun is the middle of the universe or that the earth isn't flat. Modern day medicine calls this thought process cognitive therapy. But this way of processing one's thoughts has been around for many, many, moons. You can read all about in the Bible. Or if you are not religious, The Feeling Good Handbook by Dr. Burns is a good one. Personally, I recommend reading both. No growth in life is ever just automatic. When we decide to change something we have to make a conscience choice to do so. We can't just sit around doing nothing and expect change to take place. We have to make some deliberate choices if we really want to bring about permanent change. 1. We have to CHOOSE what we think about. We have to be careful about what we THINK because our life is shaped by our thoughts. What you THINK ... You ARE. So if you are going to change your life, you have to change your thoughts. New thoughts, new ways of thinking ... this is what is needed. We have to change our mind. We must change our perspective. Willpower and determination will not bring about happy and permanent change without changing thoughts and perspective. The way we think determines the way we feel and the way we feel determines the way we act. So if you want to change your actions, you need to change the way you think. Imagine you are in driving in your car. Cruise control is set on 60 miles per hour. You decide you want to turn around and go in the opposite direction. Well you have two options. You can jerk the steering wheel with all your might and fight like heck to whip the vehicle around and make it go in the opposite direction without wrecking. While you are engaged in this test of will between you and the vehicle you will be under an enormous amount of stress. You are of course afraid that at any moment you will loose control of the vehicle and crash, possibly dying. Stress tires us out and gets the better of us at times. Sometimes we may just let go of the steering wheel all together. Next thing you know you are heading back in the direction that you were trying to steer away from. The other option is to adjust the cruise control. The cruise control in your life is your thoughts. Don't focus on action or feelings. Focus on your thoughts. When we change our thoughts, we change our feelings. When we change our feelings, we change our actions. Stop thinking thoughts that take you in the opposite direction of where you want to be. When you start changing your thoughts (your cruise control) you will find your old habits, feelings, and actions falling away. You will find a new way of life emerging. If you are listening to th

Not everyone believes in positive thinking and positive self-talk. Some consider the subject as just nonsense, Ive been scoffed at enough to know~lol :p Yet, Ive seen it work in my life and in the lives of others, including you Free. :) Hey, did I ever tell you the story of Milt? Milt, an outstandingly gifted NCAA College basketball player, was a great jumper and a very talented three-point shooter. At one point in his college basketball career he was having difficulty finding the basket, at a time when his team was preparing for the NCAA area finals. He consulted a professor at his university who was a sport psychologist and received advice on how to train mentally to effectively make perfect three points shots. His roommate teased him when he began using positive self-talk. So he developed an audiotape of himself describing perfectly in his own words what it felt like to hear the "swoosh" of the net as the ball went down. He played this tape before going to sleep and when he woke in the mornings. It was not long before Milt went out and broke a college record for scoring three point baskets in one game. His team went on to win the NCAA basketball championship that year. As you know, positive self-talk works in the same manner as creative visualization. The repeated words build mental images and scenes in the mind, and help to focus on the aim or situation one wants to achieve or create. Frequent repetitions affect the subconscious mind, which in turn reshapes and affects the way one thinks, acts and behaves. The conscious mind, the mind you think with, starts this process, and then the subconscious mind takes charge. This means that the most frequent thoughts that pass through your mind, ultimately affect your life and your destiny. So anyway, I believe you to be a great success Free and I'm goN 2keep tellN myself that too! l;) All the best~ 2 My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/20/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 451 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 9,939 Amount Saved: $2255 Life Gained: Days: 42 Hrs: 21 Mi

Thank you!! It really touches me for you to say that on this thread because I knew Free pretty much already knew everything I was telling her but I felt compelled to put it on her thread anyway. Well said Free. You are definately a person with a possitive outlook on life. Your quit has reflected that. Regardless of what has come your way, you didn't let it phase you. Nothing kept you from reaching your goal. You even managed to help so many others along the way. Your courage and walk is one to be modeled. Personally, I appreciate the words fo wisdom you have offered and the "light bulbs" you have helped me to reach. Thank you for being there and thank you for being here. Glad to see you happy and Free. Great post, Free. You are so right that our thoughts shape our lives; that we are what we think. Positive thinking is an excellent habit to form. All quitters can benefit from your lessons. Thank you. Congratulations again on 6 incredible months.
