Beth that's such great news!! That's what I meant when I was talking about 'feeling like you' again - those are the things i remember most when I was coming through a really bad bout, about a year ago. Getting through a day and actually ENJOYING myself at some points and thinking: ya! THIS is what its suppose to be like! this is what it USED to be like! Having your husband to lean on is a massive help I'm sure - there are those moments when just laying there with my boyfriend is about the only thing that does help! But we're our own people too, and we can do this! this is not something to be dealt with. It is something to overcome and you are gettin there!!! YEA BETH! Congrats hon. that must've felt so good. Hi Kate, Thanks for the uplifting advise :) I have not called back the T I fired last week and have an appt with my meds doc on monday and will ask him if he knows any really good EMDR/Anxiety/Panic therepists in my area. I think Trish was on the money as well. One great note this week- I had to go to Boston (about 3 hours away) for my friends wedding dress fitting and the next day had to go back again as I took my kids to the Fleetwood Mac concert Wed night at the Fleet Center in Boston. I was having a hard time with traffic, etc on Tuesday, made it home, turned right around wed and headed back there with my son (13 years old) and picked up my daughter at college (18 years old) and we had a blast!! Was even able to get my son and I home safe and sound after the concert and didnt get back till about 2:30am. I was really proud of myself that I was able to do all this without my husband and just "ENJOY" life for a few days!! Dont get me wrong- I had "those feelings" of "I cant do it", "You wont make it" etc, but I was able to conqure them and make them less significant than my goals this week and that was a HUGE boost to me. My suggestion for anyone suffering from this disorder- dont set yourself up for disaster, but try really hard to be proud of yourself by setting some goals every week.. walking that extra mile by yourself even if you may be worried about keeling over from a heart attack (I'm sure we all think along those lines!! -arg-) or whatever... IT FEELS SO GOOD ON THE OTHER END AFTER YOU HAVE MADE IT THROUGH!! Pats on the back are good things these days!! :p Thanks again for writing Kate and let me know if I can help you at all. Hi guys - beth - i TOTALLY think trish is right about 'shopping around' for the right therapist. its like anything else right? take babysitters for example (a HORRIBLE parallel to draw, i know, but bear with me)... all of them could have exactly the same qualifications and in the end - would that alone be good enough for you to leave your children with them? no way! what i'm saying is: some people are WAY better at their jobs than others - and this is your health we're talking about so absolutely DO not settle. I'm still a student, so I'm covered under my dad's work insurance thankfully, or else i'd never be able to even consider therapy! but after listening to trish i think i will definitely start looking back into it, because i think it'll be worthwhile. Just keep telling yourself - this is not a permanent situation (no matter how long it has been going on) - you're still you and you're going to get BACK to being FULLY you soon! take care (kate)

HI Trish, WOW did I need to hear that right now- as I am sure everyone else in the group, I am going through tough times that started these in the first place about 7 months ago and have not been able to take control of them. I will "interview" the next one- after all, it is my life they are messing with now isnt it? LOL Thanks for the upbeat letter- Acaully thanks to ALL of you for helping me with this question! Beth :)

Beth, Please don't feel this is the way it always will be. I got very discouraged myself. And didnt find the right doctor(therapist)at first either. First tried someone who really wasnt in the field, more of a social worker, not to down anyone in this field, but I knew from the first visit, I was at the wrong place, when she told me to "imagine all my problems" and "blow them up into a balloon" and release them away into the sky. Enough said there. :8o: Second one, was licensed and felt comfortable with her, but on her advice I needed medication along with therapy, so I got referred to someone else. He says, here take these (pills) and " I dont do cognitive therapy". Walked away from there crying. Finally was in a support group, and found a specialist, a couple of the members were seeing, ah finally found the one!!. Was very encouraging, supportive, helped me tremendously, felt very comfortable with him, where I felt I could finally trust and have hope. Some of us need medication in the beginning to suppress attacks, and therapy, and can go off medicine, some of us cannot, each of us is different. Please keep looking, interview the doctor yourself to see the extent they have in this area, before investing your time and money into their services. You will eventually find one that will be a godsend to you. Trish

Hi AnneMarie and Under control, Thanks both for posting. I acually ended up "firing" that therepist last week as she was creating more anxiety than I had before.. or at least adding to it.. I have had a bad day with the anxiety today, but still working and trying to keep it under control. I really wish I could do this without meds is all... I'll keep in touch, Beth

really! that's actually good to know, because while i was doing it, it didn't seem to be doing a-ny-thing and i was starting to think that NO kind of therapy would be helpful.

Hi. I don't want to put a damper on this, but from what I was able to learn, genuine research on this is not very impressive. At the moment, it seems more marketing hype than results, though we can stay tuned to see...

Hey Beth, EMDR is supposedly really very effective. They started using it on people from the gulf war who had Post Traumatic Stress. (Have you heard the story around it? Apparently a woman was about to start a thesis in psych, but didn't have a topic yet. One night, she was walking up a long, tree-lined laneway in the dark and was really nervous in the setting, and she kept looking back and forth at the trees. But by the time she got to the end of the driveway she felt so much calmer! They researched it and apparently that back and forth motion of the eyes has a calming effect on the brain)...N E Ways, didn't mean to digress. All I really wanted to say was that definitely give EMDR a try (if it worked for the guys from the gulf...) but make sure you're doing it with either a psychiatrist of psychologist with a specialty in anxiety - I did it with a masters of social work person and it didn't help as well. Hey all- I am on xanax and have been extremely sensitive to all the SSRI's and also Imipram. They have all made me feel worse so I dont take them but the Xanax needs to be tapered here ASAP (have been on it for over 6 months and I know withdrawl will be hard) but I am still having some anxiety and panic on the Xanax. Does this mean this is a hopeless situation? I have to get off the benzo (xanax) but cant take any other meds- have been in counceling (about 4 months now) and they want to wait for EMDR therepy until I am less anxious... AHhhhhhhh!! Anybody have any advise on beating this anxiety without medication? Thanks! Beth :quest:
