i am just wondering if anyone is actually saving their cigarette money? i spend 5 a day on cigarettes (not sure what that is in dollars, probably about $9) and i am gonna have money coming straight out of my bank account after i quit, equal to the amount i would have spent that month on cigarettes. so that's about 150 a month!!! my other half also smokes, but he is giving up with me for 1st january aswell. so double that and that is 300 we are saving a month! after six months we could afford a really nice holiday for that! :) sarah

I'm planning to put the money aside and use it for a couple of rewards, but I really like your idea, Faith. Think I'll buy a big jar for my nightstand. Thanks for the idea!

That's exactly the trick, Peteg, you have to actually REMOVE the money from your account -- in cash. Otherwise, it just gets lost in the day to day and loses its significance. I chose Wednesday because then I have a fun activity on the same day each week. I look forward to my ATM trips. Sometimes I think, oh, I'd better skip this week, because.....(whatever lame excuse I might have on a given week). BUT, when I spent the money on cigarettes, I ALWAYS found the money, didn't I? Never any excuses then. It really is such fun to see the bills adding up and filling up the jar. Thanks for the feedback. Keep the faith -- and the cash, too! Oh, yeah, I definitely save my cigarette money. Every Wednesday, I stop at the ATM, withdraw $50 (2-$20's and 1-$10) and when I get home, I very happily put it in my big beautiful jar on my night stand. This spring, I plan to take a wonderful vacation with the nearly $1,200 I'll have in the jar. Whoo hooooo! I'm a very visual person, so SEEING that money every night is a great reinforcement for me. I just drafted a post a moment ago so hope this doesn't show up twice. Never!! I never see any money saved from not buying cigarettes. My money, or lack there of, is fluid and forms to accommodate its boundaries. By the way, in my state the tax just shot up for cig.s to another "at least $1.25". Can I re-calculate my meter to reflect the money that I will then "save" for not spending it on cigarettes? Doesn't matter, I'm never gonna see it anyway. But, my co-worker who quit 20 years ago swears that he put money into a large glass jar once a day to the tune of what he would have spent on cigarettes. At the end of the year he had $500.00 saved (In mid-1980s). He says he spent it on a house note. :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/29/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 2 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 25 Amount Saved: $10 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 5 Mins: 38 Seconds: 50

Great idea faithfreedom! Exactly what I'm going to do from now on re the jar! I used to spend $70 each week on smokes.. so I'm going to spend $30 on myself and keep the $50 aside in a new jar I'm buying tomorrow. Wow..that comes to $200 a month...cool! And my special place for the jar will be right on top of the t.v. in my bedroom so I'll see it several times every single day :) Monica58 My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/31/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 62 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,254 Amount Saved: $558 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 1 Mins: 14 Seconds: 7

Most of my money has gone towards rewards and the rest I bank...which isn't all that much saved coz I so enjoy the rewards ! LOL.. I think though that I will start putting 1/2 aside into a can and hide it away. I would like to see the money in say 6 mths and then work with what I have to do something special with it. SUPER idea to earmark and reserve the cash. We don't, so it gets sucked into ordinary budget items. Bravo to everyone with the good sense to remove the money from the bank account!! --peteg My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/30/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 63 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,194 Amount Saved: $346.5 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 16 Mins: 0 Seconds: 59

Hi formyson I think everybody quits for different reasons. Financial was at the bottom of my list. Initially, I spent alot of my money on patches and special treats. I also go out and buy "rewards" (things that I want but would not otherwise buy). I think the important thing is that the money goes toward something that is important for YOU and if you would really like a vacation, that would be a perfect way to spend it. By the way...despite buying rewards, my bank account hasn't looked this good for awhile.
