Link between smoking and relationship breakdown !

Well, being in the field, I would venture to say that those people who smoke all show similar tendencies. Those of stuffing their feelings, low self esteem, depression, and the addictive personality in and of itself. There have been many studies that show correlations between depression and smoking, divorce and depression, and now smoking and divorce. People who are addicted to other substances also fare poorly in the divorce ratings, and it is not surprising to find that alcoholics and methamphetamine addicts have the highest divorce rates of all. But addiction is usually a living problem. The substance such as alcohol or nicotine convinces the addict that their problems goes away if they drink or smoke or do what their drug of choice is. When the underlying problem is really that the person feels uncomfortable in their own skin, or panic in certain situations, or just can't seem to talk to people. So they indulge in the drug of their choice, in our case nicotine, and thereby focus on the "fix" instead of the uncomfortable feelings and emotions. How many times have we stuffed our desire to make a fast reply and gone and smoked instead? What will we say now? How many times have we felt uncomfortable and gone and smoked instead? What will we feel now? This is what I am learning now. It's quite strange to learn this stuff at 52 years old, but yaahoo, what a ride! Thanks for such a thought provoking thread Kiwi! I definitely believe that the negative addictive (i.e. - selfish outlook, spiralling depression in my case) behaviors/tendencies really can offer nothing but poison to a relationship. I agree that my psychological and emotional growth was stunted by hiding behind a cloud of smoke. That being said - I don't blame the cigarette itself. Afterall, the power to overcome is within us all. I don't necessarily think the addictive behaviors themselves are poisonous. I think there are negative and positive addictions. For instance, I've found myself addicted to endurance running now which is an empowering and emotionally healthy outlet. But, if I'm unable to run for a few days, I find I become a bit unpleasant. But it certainly doesn't follow the depressive thought process that smoking did. I don't think, for instance, "man, I just can't stop running (smoking, alternatively), I must be some kind of loser." Quite the opposite, in fact. I guess I could have just said that, this article doesn't surprise me in the least. To greener pastures, mate. Cheers and... keep fightin' the good fight - fish :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/21/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 362 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 10,868 Amount Saved: $1810 Life Gained: Days: 46 Hrs: 20 Mins: 15 Seconds: 57

I found this artivle and thought I would share it with you all and get your opinions. An extensive study shows that smokers are more likely to divorce. The risk for marital break-up is as high as 53% among smokers. Apparently, age, race, education, income or gender makes no difference. In a study of over 33,000 young adults researchers from the University of Michigan found that smoking rates were far higher than average among those men and women who would later divorce. Therefore, smoking is a predictor of divorce. (When I think about the people I know who are divorced, roughly half of them are smokers...weird! What about you?) Studies indicate that younger smokers "enter adulthood with more psychological problems than non-smokers". Additionally, adult smokers have been shown to have higher levels of depression and anxiety. These are the type of challenges and issues which can lead to difficulties in relationships. Does that explain my first marriage ??? Kiwi, Thanks for the insight! Communication is always a key component to any relationship. This disease has taken control of us long enough! There are many avenues of support to tap into for help. Take it one step at a time and take the steps to help you communicate, and stay quit. All thought are welcome, Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
