Thank you Butterfly swimmer. i did appreciate a response!! i didn't intend to step on anyones toes, just a question i had. Seemed like such a loss of a person who you respect for their knowledge and input. the support from this group is unreal, and the knowledge is sometimes overwhelming. i hope when i am smoke free, i have that same knowledge in me. by reading all through out the day i have learned a lot how to beat this thing. i did it once over 35 years ago and i can and will do it again. again thanks!!!! judy My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/14/2007 Smoke-Free Days: -1 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: $0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

hi, i am getting ready for wednesday, my new quit date. got my priorities in line this time! this time its about me, and my family members will have to deal with their own family problems!!! i am going to try cold turket this time as i got sores in my mouth from the gum and the patch gave me very bad nightmares and burned on my arm. just one question i have. i have been reading all the posts daily and i saw one that said if a relapse occured you came back with a new name. why would you do that? i think it is important to know that even the long term quitters will have a problem with coping with the withdrawal symptoms. instead of changing your name so we don't know who you are, i think it would be better to let us new quitters know that we should now be ashamed of outselves, and we must start again to a smoke free life. i read the posts where there is so much knowledge to them that it does almost seem as these are some that have changed their name. anyway keep the knowledge coming to all of us striving for this new and healthy life. we get so used to seeing certain names that we learn to respect for their input on the site and look for them daily. please don't change your name and come back, just admit to your failure and continue for all of us here. slivers My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/14/2007 Smoke-Free Days: -1 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: $0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Slivers, So glad you're coming back with a new quit date. In 2006 I think I came back with 4 or 5 different quit dates, and I decided to keep my name. Right now I'm one month smoke free, and glad I've kept my name!!!! Slivers, Generally speaking, and I know that when we speak generally, we can sometimes get into trouble, and I'm not meaning anything bad against those who HAVE changed their names, but from what I have seen and from the ones who I know have changed their names, it seems that the powerhouses of knowledge are generally not the ones who change their names... it's usually ones who either continuously slipped and relapsed, perhaps because they weren't ready to quit, and then when they really were, they came back as somebody new as a way to start over fresh. Or they weren't really involved... perhaps they posted a few times and then slipped/relapsed and then changed their name. Because they didn't post much, they didn't have any strong ties with anybody, so it didn't matter that they changed their names. The third category I see a lot is those who only posted to themselves... never really offered a hand to others. In fact, of the people who I know who have changed their names, this is the most common. The last category, and the one that I fit in, is that my original name on this site was pam061705 - the day I quit. I didn't like having the date I quit attached to my name, since I knew that there was a possibility that I might slip (ok, yes, I was being synical and pestimistic, and yes, it did in fact happen), so I changed my name so that the date I quit wouldn't be tied to my name... but I let everybody know who I was. I didn't just disapear and then come back as a different identity. But, oftentimes, it's not just one of these categories above either... they might fit into more than one. The people who post a lot to others and seem like they spend forever here and really try to do as much good as they can, don't change their names if they slip or relapse... they've made too many connections as themselves and since they have made so many friends, they want their friends to see them progress. Again, this is all from my observations, having been on this site for over a year and a half now. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule and I know that I don't know everybody who's changed their names, but from the knowledge that I have about those who have, this seems to be the trend. So, I guess what I'm saying is post often, help as many people as yo

slivers, Some people think it's a new quit, so they should have a new name. Personally, it's hard for me when others change their names because I often wonder "what ever happened to so-and-so" and then come to find out that they're still here quitting, but just under a new name... and that leads me to wonder who else is quitting under a different name. Because there are MANY that I still wonder about, and I wonder if they're trying to quit again or not and it would be nice to know that if they are still here, who they are so that I can have that background knowledge to help them better... the more I know about somebody's circumstances, the more able I am to tailer my posts to help them as best I can. BUT, at the same time, I understand why they change their names. Some people just can't handle the embarrassment and are afraid of the posts they might get (sometimes, the members here, while always meaning well, can be a little too harsh and make people not want to post anymore) and if it comes down to just not posting at all. And, if it's a choice between changing their name and simply disappearing and not using this site for support anymore, I would MUCH rather that they post under a new name. But the problem is that it gives those who had slipped or relapsed and are still trying under their old name little to no hope that they can be successful. I know of a few people who have changed their names and are now quite successful in their quits, but were not very successful before they changed their names. Coming from somebody who has slipped and did not change my name, when I was going through the beginning stages of recovering from my multiple slips, it would have been nice to see some people who had also recovered from multiple slips and relapses, but there were none that I'd seen that had recovered from 3 or more slips to go on to have a successful quit. That was very disheartening to me, since I'd had 3 slips. If somebody HAD had that many slips, but then decided to come back and change their name, their success was lost on me, since I didn't get to see that, since I wouldn't have known who that person was. After my third slip, I did think about signing up with a different email address and coming back as a totally different person with a d

Everyone is different slivers. Some may be embarrased to come back using the old name. Who knows. The important thing is coming back and trying again I think. Good luck to you!
