getting family to quit

for 17 år siden 0 607 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Well Kiwi, I read this yesterday but wanted to dwell on it a little longer. Guess what? My entire family (adults) smoke including my husband. Do you think I like it? Heck no. Will it get me to smoke again? Not on my life it wont. But I will tell you a little secret. My dad quit for 20+ YEARS and he had started back up this past summer. Talk about being an outcast. No one in my family was like me and smoke free. My dad was my side kick so I could hang around someone who didn't smoke. WEll guess what, nagging didn't work with anyone (hubby would gt so mad at me) and my father FINALLY quit once again. He didn't tell anyone but I had asked my mom why he was so cranky lately and she whispered he has been smoke free for two weeks!! woohooo. Some of the closest friends here knew my dad started back up and well, last night I found a pack in my daughter's car. Talk about loosing a gasket. I was so ticked off and Kaiti, thanks for listening on the phone. I was so hurt and layed my journal of my quit from day one on her bed last night so she could see what I went through while she wasn't at home. I want to stop it before she gets too far into smoking that she can't quit. So just be gentle with them. I did. Hi kiwi - My vote is no... Allow others to decide what they need to do for themselves, friend... I always try to remember how I felt when I smoked... I felt like it was my business, and if anyone thought about pushing me, I would simply push back. We all have to make our own decisions... This would explain the weird smirks i got from my cigarette smoking family members when asked 'how long ago did i quit smoking & why did i stop ?'. when i replied "2 years, because i don't want to smoke anymore - good stuff aye" i bought silence to the room ! ... not a word. i guess they were stunned by how simple my reply was, anyway i left it at that & went for a we walky. I gave no 'no-smoking' pressies this year, so most of them still talk to me. I guess it's a bit like going fishing, i'll wait & see. My wife & I wish that my parents would stop smoking, especially my mother as she's quite fragile. In the spirit of xmass & all that, would it be bad taste to give pressies containing 'quit smoking' books to all the smokers in my family (which is everyone except yours truly). They make me feel like an outsider cos i don't smell of stale cigarettes anymore. any light hearted suggestions / experiences anyone. Kia ora Kiwi, I have to asgree with the others. All you can do is hold your head high and set a good example. I dont blame you at all for feeling the way you do about your whanau, you love them and are concerned for them but christmas is not the time. Maybe a subtle somethging for new years eve in time for those resolutions. Id include an open and frank letter telling them that you love them and that you are worried about them. Point out that you have succeeded and are willing to help them if they want to make the change. But if its too strong they will just resist straight out. It reallly come down to them wanting to stop...so show them how wonderful your life is without smoking..how mush better the quality of life and the better off the bank balance. I wish you well mate...and have a merry Christmas. Ka kite ano, e noho ra !! Just my thought....if, when I were still smoking, my kids had given me a quit smoking gift (as my main Christmas gift understand) I would have been rather upset and disappointed. The majority of smokers don't take well to being told or even having it suggested that they quit......they are addicts and they take this as some sort of personal affront. I know how you want your loved ones to stop smoking (been there done that)....and there is nothing wrong with giving them quitting information....but don't make that their Christmas gift.....make it something that you "had", no longer "need", and thought they might just like to "look at"??? don't wrap it up...simply lay it down and drop the subject of them accepting or refusing it. They have to come to it....it can't be forced on them. and then spread around YOUR pride in YOUR quit!!!! just remember...it is NEVER about them still smoking....it is ALL about how proud you are of YOURSELF!!! I have said since the beginnning of my quitting......"smokers WATCH quitters" You are sending an up close and personal message about what it is like to be a quitter......so you want to make that message a wonderful one! You are positive, relaxed in yourSELF, PROUD of yourSELF, determined to KEEP it up, SO SO grateful of the wonderful rewards that come ONLY to a quitter (rewards you never imagined as a smoker)and you are never, never nagging or rude to the person who is still smoking.....cause you know they are addicts and the addiction is to blame for the smoking. so believe me....they are watching your reaction to everything...whether you think so or not.....they are watching.
